In and Out of the Rabbit Hole ...

Yesterday, Mom and I discussed the doctor's appointment for Tuesday with Dr. Head. "Are you sure I still have that appointment? "Yes Mom, I called them to be sure."

"Well, what day did you call them? I called them and they said they didn't have anything for me," she said.

"I know," I said. "They called to let me know that you wanted to cancel."

"Cancel? No I didn't cancel anything. I was just trying to find out if I had any more appointments and when they were. I think you should call them back and find out if I really do have an appointment. Besides, I can't go, I have an appointment with my lawyer at 11 that day. How long is this test supposed to last anyway? Are you sure I have an appointment? What day did you call them? I called them on Thursday and they said they didn't have anything. You need to call them again to make sure I really do have an appointment.

Later, "I don't think I need to go to any more of those doctors. I'm happy. I don't care what you think. I'm HAPPY! AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS!!!!

"And I'm doing just fine. Boyfriend thinks I'm fine and my friends all think I'm fine. Now, I want to talk to you about that stunt you pulled on the expressway in Georgia, young lady. There was no good reason for you to sit there and refuse to start the car. You shouldn't have called that ambulance. I'm not sure I'll ever forgive you." And on and on and on.

"I did the best I could Mom" has become my mantra. So that's what I said. Then I left. She was going to "think" about whether she would go to the doctor's appointment or not.

She called this morning about 11 am. "I've decided that I will go to that doctor's appointment after all." Yes! Fist pumping, I managed to sound very calm and said, "I'm glad to hear that mom."

She called this evening about 10 p.m. "Do I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow? I've looked and looked but I don't see anything on my calendar. I'm sure I have one, don't I?"

Take a breath and count to ten. Again. Okay. "Yes, it's with Dr. Head-shrinker out at Rest Haven. I think we talked about it this morning when I was on my way to my appointment."

"We did? Well why isn't it on my calendar then?" she said.

More deep breaths and counting. "I think you just started to use that calendar after we got back from Florida, didn't you? I thought you had said something about losing the other one."

"Well, I can't find the other one so I HAD to start a new one," she said.

Um, I thought that was what I said... So, she'll meet me there. It's at 8:30a.m.

I have a headache. Please pass the Goody's powders.
