Lucky Squirrel

I've named the two mangy squirrels - Lucky and Stripe. Lucky is the one who lost the most fur.

I took this photo of Lucky today - she jumped up right when I pressed the button, so her side shows very well. Even her tail is starting to show some new hair.

This is her before photo, taken about three weeks ago.

She didn't get her medicine today because when I threw it, it landed in the deep snow. (We have about a foot of new snow.) I finally went out and cleaned off most of the stuff so I can try again tomorrow.

She's getting used to me and doesn't run off when I toss peanuts out to her. I don't know how I feel about that. I don't want to turn her into a pet or become dependent on me for her food. And I really don't want her to lose her fear of other people. On the other hand, she is fun to watch.

How nice of you helping the sick squirrel out - she sure is looking a lot healthier and bushier!

I can't stand to see any animals suffer. Truthfully, my original thought was to keep it from spreading to my dogs. There were three sick squirrels, but I have only seen two since I got the medicine. Both are doing very well! Yesterday her tail was even fluffier! She's going to be just fine. I think her buddy, Stripe, is healing well too.

Thanks Martha. I'm very glad that the medicine is working. My vet asked about them today and was happy about their progress too.

Doesn't seem as though you'd be giving her so many peanuts that she'd become dependent on that as her only food supply. On the other hand, it's good that she's hungry enough to eat the treated nuts every day!

I didn't put the medicine on the peanuts after you commented that they might bury them. It goes on saltine crackers with peanut butter. Yum! I think you're right about her eating habits - I only give her a couple of peanuts every day. Mostly I worry about her losing her fear of humans.
