Let Me Out of Here!

image

Gertie is on crate rest for the second time in three weeks. She woke up screaming a couple of days before Christmas and was lame in her left front leg. The vet discovered that she has disc disease and showed me the problem area in her neck. She recovered after a week - about the time she finished her meds.

Friday, it started affecting her back legs. She woke up and couldn't control her back legs. She was walking as if she was drunk. She didn't seem to be in any pain and wasn't incontinent. Back to the vet. She is now on total crate rest for at least a week. Her meds were increased and are to be given for a longer period of time.

Gertie doesn't seem to mind being in the crate and is doing better so it seems to be helping.

I hope she improves enough to never go through this again, but it's doubtful. If she has the same problem in a week or so, I will have to make a tough decision.

She's the youngest of my three, and has always been the healthiest. I know the other two aren't going to be around much longer but I never thought I would lose Gertie so soon.

Re: the med — Sorry, no, I don't know the name, but will ask my brother. His dear dog, Moose, was a huge lab, almost a great Dane size, and I know the vet used what I thought was a standard anti-inflammatory plus something to protect Moose's tummy. I'll get back to you....

Sending care and support....
My brother's wonderful large lab had the same thing, and the vet figured out a daily dose of anti-inflammatory med which controlled the flares for some years. The dog was able to be fairly active, and stayed comfortable. I do hope Gertie will rebound.

Thanks Martha. Do you know what the medication is? She's on Prednisone and a muscle relaxer now, but can't stay on the steroid for very long. I'll be glad when I can talk to my regular vet about her.

You're being a good mom -- please don't "off" her too soon. Give her a kiss from me.

Thanks Teal. I'll give the kiss and a hug too! I don't want to put her down, but I can't see keeping her in a create every other week for very long.

I had the kind of surgery she would need. I won't ever do it again to myself - let alone my dog. It's very risky, the recovery is excruciating and 25% of those who have it come out with more pain. That's me.
