Car Breakins
Car Breakins
Wow! At my fitness center last week a car was broken into in broad daylight. Ten in the morning. The woman (daughter of my friend) left her purse between the seats. It was not visible. When she came out, the side window was smashed and the purse was gone. Of course she should have known better than to leave the purse in the car. It seems very risky behavior to break into a car in a parking lot where a lot of people are coming and going. Now it turns out that there is a ring of thieves doing just that. They watch for women parking and going into a facility (park building, day care) without a purse. Since women always carry purses, they figure the purse is in the car, if they didn't see her put her purse in the trunk. They break a side window, if the car is locked, steal the purse with id and checkbook, write a check, go to a nearby bank, park at the farthest driveup window (hard to see driver), and use the identification from the purse to cash the check. By the time the woman comes out to her car, they are long gone and so is the money. One suburb near me had 60 cases of this happen in the last year. My police blotter always has a note saying not to leave anything in your car that you don't want to lose. Wow!
