Car Breakins

Wow! At my fitness center last week a car was broken into in broad daylight. Ten in the morning. The woman (daughter of my friend) left her purse between the seats. It was not visible. When she came out, the side window was smashed and the purse was gone. Of course she should have known better than to leave the purse in the car. It seems very risky behavior to break into a car in a parking lot where a lot of people are coming and going. Now it turns out that there is a ring of thieves doing just that. They watch for women parking and going into a facility (park building, day care) without a purse. Since women always carry purses, they figure the purse is in the car, if they didn't see her put her purse in the trunk. They break a side window, if the car is locked, steal the purse with id and checkbook, write a check, go to a nearby bank, park at the farthest driveup window (hard to see driver), and use the identification from the purse to cash the check. By the time the woman comes out to her car, they are long gone and so is the money. One suburb near me had 60 cases of this happen in the last year. My police blotter always has a note saying not to leave anything in your car that you don't want to lose. Wow!

As people get more and more desperate, we are going to see an increase in
crime.

I hate when that happens. Since my house door has been kicked in twice, I decided just to leave it unlocked! But I still habitually lock it . It's a sickening feeling to be invaded.

You are lucky you were not home when those invasions happened. It could have ended very badly.

My doors are locked too. And my car is empty inside.

I lock everything here, and lately the burglars have been entering houses by kicking-in the basement windows and crawling into the cellars. So I not only latch them on the inside but I asked my landlord and got permission to fasten corner angles across the edges with long screws - from the inside. I never need to open them anyway.

What in the world is going on that we need to take such drastic measures in our own homes? It used to be that we didn't need to lock our doors or our cars at all. Now we are told to lock our cars in our locked garages.

I always take my purse because it holds too much stuff that I always seem to need...diapers, bottles, money, keys, gum for the boy, cough drops for me...no wonder my shoulders ache, eh?

And good luck to any thieves trying to cash a cheque of mine! Wouldn't get them very far!!!

I always have my purse except when I am on my bike. Then it is locked in the house.

I'd never thought of them watching to see if we don't carry our purse inside. I don't carry a purse most of the time, and some of the time it is at home, not even in the car. But they would go ahead and break in thinking it must be there somewhere. Life is so complicated!

This must be a nation-wide deal. The group that is targeting the Chicago suburbs is supposed to be from Florida. Four people-the 2 men do the robbing, the 2 women do the check cashing.

I always lock my doors. House doors, car doors. If somebody is going to steal from me they're gonna have to work for it.
