What I have done with quilt making is try to use as much as I can of what my mother left in each new quilt I make, and I'm working on finishing up some that she started.
What I have discovered is that although of course you can still buy blue fabric and dark red fabric, color styles have changed in the last 40 years since she started those quilts, and I can no longer find coordinating fabrics for the quilt backing and binding. It's not the death of the projects, just slows things down.
All this aside, a couple of weeks ago I decided to deviate from my policy of not acquiring more supplies than I can use up in a reasonable time by investing in a big bunch of knitting yarn. I did it because I could get it wholesale, ordered from the factory by a friend. There was no minimum number of balls per color, so I could look at my planned projects and order just exactly what I guessed I'd need. And the price was about 40% of retail.
Now that it has arrived via Mr. UPS, I just hope I don't die before I get it all knitted up.
This is the all of it.

This yarn was the most expensive, but it was still a lot less than the yarn shops charge. It's a hand-dyed yarn - they stretch it all out and paint on the colors. The color name is mountain meadow.

It is all so pretty and I'd like to knit some small samples to see how it looks made up. Tried to talk Mr. Troutbend into doing that for me so I can keep working on my current sweater, but he refuses.
Here's the reds and purple:

I just hope that I live long enough to use it up.
