Weather Watchers

Today I participated in a weather watcher class. Now I'm ready to identify tornados. I learned that we are all likely to underestimate distance, so if we think some big weather event is five miles away, we're supposed to call it 7 or 8 miles. And this area is on track to have a wet summer: good news because we worry so much about fire danger.

Here is the river this morning.

That horizontal evergreen tree went down in the flood when the riverbank washed out, but the roots are still in dirt, and it will probably live forever like that. There is another horizontal tree downstream a bit that died, but we'll probably leave it in place because the mink lives there, and it would slow down the velocity of future floodwaters. We've planted three little seedling fir trees in the bare spot and in 30 years they'll be a good size.

The tree reminds me of North-South Campground. The wind always blows in the same direction and the trees are twisted and bent--all in the same direction. It's amazing that they don't fall over, but that's natural growth for them.

we had a tornado sighting here in Cow Snot last summer. all of us ran out to see it like a bunch of rubbernecking morons. It didn't touch down anywhere near though, thank goodness. the Lord protects drunks and fools, I guess. hee hee.
