From Today's Paper

"A Roman Catholic priest in Modesto, Calif., has told parishioners that they should confess if they voted for Barack Obama because the president-elect supports abortion.

The Rev. Joseph Illo said his parishioners at St. Joseph's Catholic Church shouldn't risk losing their "state of grace" by receiving communion sacrilegiously. He delivered the message in a Nov. 21 letter and during Mass.

In an interview last week with the Modesto Bee, Illo said he sent the letter because Catholic teaching requires that people go to confession when they commit a mortal sin.

During the presidential campaign, many bishops told Catholic politicians and voters that abortion should be the most important consideration in deciding which candidate to back."

I would not respect a religion whose leaders don't enforce its tenets, but this surprised me. I can see their point, because if people are going to say they belong to a certain religion, they shouldn't pick and choose what practices they are going to observe as if it was a cafeteria, but I wonder if the ability to have mortal sins absolved through confession makes it easier to sin.

I'm a pro-choice Obama supporter myself, and not Catholic in case you wondered.

They must make voting a mortal sin. They use the term lightly.

Just one more example of the narrow, unrealistic perspective preached by those wedded to religious dogma.

And here all along I though it was the Democrats that were called "do-gooders". What's the difference in "tree hugging" and "fetus saving"? What a crazy society we live in.

Oh My!!!! Another Modesto scandal. I googled it and found the article and also a blog. The first poster on the blog was named, Marianne. I'm sure glad I don't live in that town anymore. Someone might think it was me since I used to write articles for the Bee on occasion. I do have an opinion, but not as harsh as the "Marianne" on the blog. Thanks for posting this bit of news from my previous "hometown." Annie :o)

I say Tax them all. They lost their right to be tax exempt. (Anyone who does what a priest or preacher says to do must be a true lamb. Baa-baa.)

It is the priests/rabbi/ministers job to teach their particular religion's doctrines and creeds, regardless of how much this might conflict with or intrude upon "the people's" everyday life. id-est; Sodom & Gomorrah!!!!!

The minute priests/ministers dictate political decisions from the pulpit they are not observing the Constitution's separation of church and state, and their church's tax-exempt status should be reviewed and, if necessary, withdrawn. If our laws were enforced with regard to separation, priests would shut up about publicly condemning political positions. Then, of course, they would be hypocrites? But they already are. How about the pedophiles? How about gay priests? Organized religion is a mess. But even their parishioners already know this because very few pay attention, to which I say Right On.

I don't think voting for Obama is ever listed in the Bible as a sin. I don't remember that in the ten commandments. I did think it was interesting how many people voted for Obama considering that there are a few of his views would not agree with some religions. No judgement involved-just thought it was interesting.

This is a never ending story Laura. It will never go away.
They will always complain about this matter.
I do not have any say in this.
But a woman has a right to do with her body.
So,it is up to them.
Really,do not know too much about this matter.
