Teterboro

Of course, now when we hear of the Teterboro, NJ airport, we think of Capt Scully and his miraculous landing on the Hudson. In case you were under a rock, Teterboro was one of the fields that air traffic control suggested he try to land at.

Here are a couple of clips related to flying airplanes. I'm sorry my dad isn't around to hear the first - Arthur Godfrey sings a catchy song called "Teterboro Tower" because my dad loved flying his Cessna and buzzing the tower.

The second clip is by a pilot of one of those fancy corporate jets singing about how busy the Teterboro airport is, to the tune of 'Kokomo' by the Beach Boys.

Here's a great picture. I don't know where it is, but it's not Denver or Las Vegas.

Flew on commercial airliner in the 50s. You didn't have cocoon entries, so you walked outside on the tarmac, up the stair trolley rolled up to the plane entry. The center aisle even on big planes was slanted, the engines were propeller driven, lots of noise. During the entire flight you could see the ground because you weren't flying at jet heights and that made the journey fascinating. Everyone was dressed for business, there were no babies, your seat companions were mostly business people, most were intelligent conversationalists. Food was served, not haute cuisine but not bad. Security was minimal; more wasn't needed. Also flew in Piper Cub when I was 14, courtesy of a pilot I met in the Civilian Air Patrol that I joined because I was airplane crazy. Flying today is a chore and boring and no one wants to sit next to families. But we all know this.

I have never been in an aeroplane - I very much doubt if I ever will. I have been a few air fields though, usually to wave someone off. I think that last picture is a stunning photograph

Flying in a big jetliner is boring, like sitting in your living room while you try to figure out how to stay entertained - knitting is a good time filler - but flying in a small plane, sometimes even a commercial small plane, is very exciting.

Ol' Arthur Godfrey. I can still see him strumming that uke. Couldn't figure out where on earth that airport is in the last photo. Quito, Ecuador?

It's probably USA somewhere - note the SW Airlines plane on the tarmac. I was wondering if it was Alaska, but they don't fly up there. Maybe that's the Cascades, so Sea-Tac, perhaps. I don't know if they've had the moisture and cold for to be new 2010 snow, but the photo could have been taken last year or before.

I remember when flying was almost a miracle and Amelia Earhart was in the
news via radio and newspaper.

Did you fly in the 50s? Read my comment below.

Whenever I start complaining about today's celebrities and all their media spotlight, I remember what I've heard about how Amelia Earhart was a media darling back in her day. Of course that media back then wasn't as much in our face.

I really enjoyed flying with my dad in his Cessna because you can fly low enough to see the end of a cow's tail and it's like a sightseeing road trip at a good clip and no stop signs. If he hadn't crashed it I might have inherited the plane and become pilot.

Funny to be intrigued by flying and not really like to actually fly in planes. But even my understanding the physics of flying doesn't diminish its magic. When I was little, my older brother would take me to the airport and we'd watch takeoffs and landings, and he'd explain how airplanes fly. After going over all the details, he'd ask me if I'd understood whatever the point he was trying to teach me. I'd always say, "Oh, yes! It's magic!"

It's gotta be magic, involving some pixie dust and voodoo, I'm sure.

The second one didn't really make me want to travel around the country by the time it was done, but the thought flashed through my mind a time or during the course of it.
