What's New Here on a Sunday

Not much going on today. It's sunny, warm, and not a cloud in the sky. We could use some rain, so I will have to water the lawns tomorrow.

The fox was here briefly. I was surprised he didn't stay around longer.

This is my cherry tomato plant.

I think this is an Early Girl:

Here is an item from the October 1951 issue of Reader's Digest. I'm not a big fan the Digest, but it's fun to look at old magazines.

Joke:
"A Hollywood producer, who had been telling everyone about his diet, was discovered in a restaurant eating a tremendous steak. 'What's the idea?' demanded a friend. 'I thought you were on a diet.'

'I am,' said the producer. 'This is just to give me the strength to continue it.'

Your tomatoes look great. Mine have stopped producing. I bet the heat
lamp helps.

I think the lamp made a big difference, but have to give some credit to it being a warmer summer than usual. Now that fall is coming, I've got the lamp on from dusk to dawn.

If nighttime temps do not fall below 75 degrees, the blossoms will never produce tomatoes. That's what has happened here at least two years in a row. When it gets that hot, they just stop producing. Temps have been dipping below that lately, viola! tomatoes.

I am thinking about trying to plant vegetables in Las Vegas for over the winter. One of these years I'll work up to it; it has to be raised beds because the native dirt there is sterile.

Guess what, after a brief hiatus due to the heat, my tomatoes are producing again, little at a time. Yours look great!

I didn't know it could get too hot for tomatoes. In August, I picked off any new tomato flowers because they wouldn't have time to grow, and the plant would be able to concentrate on the tomatoes already on the vines.

Great picture of the fox. Please, give him a name.
comment by tealstar on Sept 9, 2012 4:08 PM ()
It was hard enough naming the cat. The fox has never told me what his name is, if he wanted me to call him a name, he'd have told me. But if he ever does tell me, I'll let you know what he says.

Now that producer is a man after my own heart!!
The fox and the tomatoes look good!!!

Your post about going to Outback got me thinking about steak.

Your tomato plant looks so lush. Mine are still limping along with very few leaves and fewer tomatoes.
comment by boots586 on Sept 9, 2012 2:43 PM ()
The tomatoes are in a raised planter with a lamp underneath on a timer. The base of the planter is surrounded with a sheet, and the lamp comes on in the middle of the night to try to heat the dirt. I don't know if that has made a difference, or we owe it to this summer's warmer weather.
