A Spike Jones Christmas

You might recognize Spike Jones and the City Slickers from their rendition of All I want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth performed by George Rock, the man on the left. That's Spike himself on the right, wearing his signature plaid suit.

Here is a Christmas medley by Spike and the Slickers:

This is a darling animation of the Nuttin' for Christmas song:

Another of my favorites that was on the Spike Jones Christmas albumn is "I'm the Angel in the Christmas Play." I'm looking for a video I can post. Meanwhile, here is a link to a performance by a precocious little girl. Listen to the lyrics: very funny.

I knew these songs, from childhood when my older brother or sisters sang them, but never knew where they came from. I adore those suits.

I made a spreadsheet of all the Spike Jones songs so I can keep track of my collection. Heaven forbid there is one out there I've never heard.

I forgot all the songs I loved. Cocktails for Two. The Carmen opera. They are all on YouTube.

YouTube is a miracle, isn't it? All I have to do is think of some obscure song, and there it is.

I listen to his CDs in the car all the time. It helps the time pass when I'm driving through Wyoming.

I'm going to sort out my Christmas CDs this afternoon and bake some cookies.

I saw Spike Jones when I was a little girl. He even appealed to children.

Oh! I would love to have seen him in person.

They were silly and funny, but all skilled and professional musicians.

Hoosier Hotshots is another fun old-timey band.

I bet kids today never even heard of Spike Jones--heck, anyone under 50 probably hasn't!

I'm sure they haven't. I'm so thankful for YouTube.

My parents had several Spike Jones 78's and my sis and I listened to them often. Hilarious!

We had one old, scratched 78 of Beetlebaum when I was a kid. It had so many skips in it, we weighted the tone arm with a nickel so it stayed in the tracks. But I didn't really start collecting his music until the 1970s.

Love the suit and the music. It brings back memories.

Back in their hey day, it was probably what Alvin and the Chipmunks first record was to me growing up.
