The Snow Has Ended

I haven't seen this much snow here in 10 years. The sun came out today, and it's subsiding fast, but it's still very deep.

Yesterday I was feeling snowbound when I heard cars, and I'll be darned it if wasn't some fishermen. It was two guides and two clients, and they fished as if it wasn't snowing. It was a nice day, really, because there was no wind. You can just see a couple of them down there on the left where the river starts to turn.

These icicles are the result of the metal roof, and a very interesting spiral formation has resulted from the snow rolling slowly off the edge of the roof. This can't be very good for the rain gutters and we're going to have to consider what to do about it.

The sun came out today and the trees started shedding their snow.

Know you are glad for the snow when you need the moisture so much. But I shivering thinking of standing in that cold water....

Just so pretty... I love that you share it with us!

My problem appears to be positioning that creates pressure on a nerve. I do less well on any mattress than I do on the floor. I ordered a sitting back rest for the bed because I do better when I am semi upright, even though I much prefer to sleep without being raised and on my side. That creates problems these days. It should get here any day. If it doesn't work, the site said I could send it back, no shipping charge. But I just may keep it and put it in the guest bedroom.

Hiss boo to all those who don't like snow. I love it. Only time it was not lovable was after it warmed up and slush built up to interfere with crosswalks in the city. I took a pic out of our New York bathroom window showing the nabe covered in snow. Once in a while I take it out and look at it and sigh.

I love snow, I love rain. Hail I can do without, but in general, any moisture is cause for celebration. We're flirting with dust bowl conditions here. I hope you are doing well. I meant to tell you that I put a memory foam topper on my mattress, and it has made a huge difference for muscle stiffness.

I don't need to see scenes like that until next winter! And even then I could do without it! I looked at the most recent drought monitor last night (16 April) and although there are still small pockets of exceptional drought, the map is turning lighter every week. The east is in good shape and the west is following!

I laugh at myself when I'm out there taking pictures of how deep the snow is on the truck. Am I really going to save these pictures for years to come? I could recycle the one from 3 years ago and say I took it during the most recent storm and not know the difference. However, this year we got a bunch of dust from the southwest that has turned this snow brown. I guess that sets this year apart.

I know you will have a practical solution to the icicles. I am so ready
for a good, warm day. I would never make it in Alaska.

I'm so grateful for this snow. Could be, if I had some urgent need to be somewhere during the storm, I wouldn't have been so thrilled with it.

You keep on talking about this 'snow' stuff---and icicles--is that like sun and heat?!?!?! Always a smart arse in the crowd!!
comment by greatmartin on Apr 18, 2013 7:01 PM ()
Yes, similar to sun and heat, but different.

That is exactly what has torn up our gutters. They're practically useless and, after years of fixing them each spring, the next winter damages them some more. I'm about to give up on them.

We don't often get this much snow, but now we know how it's going to work with the new roof, we're going to look into getting some of those snow guards. I always thought they were a New England thing, but welcome to West Vermont. I'm going to be spending the next few months squinting at all the other metal roofs around here to see if anyone else has gotten them.

Steve, google "snow guards". They attach to the roof and prevent what you see in the pics. I have a metal roof which used to slide like that and they put the snow guards when they put the gutters up last summer. It's only been one winter, but the guards do seem to work. The snow stays up above the guards and melts from there.
