Aviation History: New York City

Those were the days when we could go to the airport any time we wanted and stand up there on the observation deck to watch the planes come and go. This picture was taken in 1948.

Notice how dressed up the family members are.

Want to see more? This is a great collection of photos taken at the New York City airports: La Guardia and Idlewild/John F. Kennedy through the decades.

As a child, one of my older brothers and I would go to the airport and watch planes take off and land, sometimes from observation station on the airport roof and other times sitting in the family car at an open field next door. He would explain the physics of flight, but I just saw the magic.

Wow you just brought back a memory for me - I remember watching planes take off with my dad outside like that. Cool!

Right now I am caught up in the restaurant/car Fedora's in the Village--use to go there a lot on the 60s--didn't know they were still in business!!! And I didn't have to take a plane there--just the IND!

We have lost a lot as society advances. Elegance in dress for one and
the fun of watching the planes is another.
