Roofing Update

"City people try to buy time as a rule, when they can, whereas country people are prepared to kill time, although both try to cherish in their mind's eye the notion of a better life ahead." Edward Hoagland

I'm shocked that it has been so long since I last posted something here.

The roofers are almost done with the roof. We knew they are subcontractors of the roofing company, but come to find out these guys are really just local handymen who live near us. They do all sorts of work, anything but electrical. It's nice to find a local outfit because we've got at least two more roofing projects that need doing, and it would be a savings to not go through the roofing company. I'm glad we did for our house, because it's so important that it not leak, and they will guarantee the workmanship, but these other projects aren't as critical.

This afternoon he pointed out to me that they matched the lines of the roofing on the back of our house. It's one of those things we wouldn't have noticed unless they didn't match it. It's the ridges there on the lower part of the roof, where the pitch changes. They could easily have not matched them, and there would be nothing wrong with that, but it would not look as good.

They should be able to finish up tomorrow. The new guests from Wisconsin moved in today - 6 days. They are important to me because they have relatives not far from here, so I want them to give a good report so maybe we'll get some more business. I was concerned the roofing would disturb them, but they were fine with it. What a relief.

Quackers is still with us. The roofers didn't show up yesterday, and he was so lonely. I had to run to the post office, and when I got back, all hell had broken loose. The fox showed up and was in the front yard looking at Quackers, who was doing a lot of quacking. (He's a goose but sounds more like a duck.) A fisherman heard him and came up into the yard to see what was the matter, and there was the fox, but since it was our fox, it didn't run away like he expected, it walked toward him and Quackers. So he leaned over and hit the fox on the nose with his hat. Oh my. I walked up with the mail in hand, and he told me all this, and how the fox had lingered around the yard before it went behind the house.

I went in and looked out the kitchen window, and there was the fox waiting for me to put out some food, like nothing had happened.

He ate, and hid a dog biscuit, but the fisherman had some hunting dogs in the back of his truck, and they were whining to get out and eat something - the goose or the fox, or possibly both - and that upset him, so he left. I think all the commotion from the roofing project has been keeping him away. I feel terrible about it - like when a college kid comes home to find the parental home in chaos, new kids have moved in, and the poor kid goes back to college with unresolved misunderstandings.

So, without the roofers to watch the goose, I was afraid the fox would come back any time and eat him, so I had to babysit him all day yesterday. This involves bringing him around to the back yard so I can sit in the shade and take a cat nap on the lounge chair. Quackers seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. At one point I started to take him swimming in the river, but discovered the camera battery was low, so I couldn't film it. I was going to leave him in the water while I went to plug it in, but like a 3-year old, he wouldn't stay by himself, and insisted on following me back home. I'll take him swimming again soon.

When we didn't hear from you, I was afraid the fire had driven you off. Matching the roof lines is a lot like matching plaid in sewing, isn't it? Or wallpaper. That fox is getting too tame. I would go with the sign idea to warn people about the fox. Maybe the goose, too.

I thought of the plaid, too, when he was explaining it. I've always wondered how the fox acts toward other people. He maintains a safe space with me, I would be surprised if I could reach his nose if I had a hat to swing at him. I guess next time we have company and he comes around, I'll test it by having them go out there. The goose is definitely friendly to most people, hard to say how he is with other animals.

It is pretty. I am glad that you posted the picture so I can visulize it now.

I keep looking at it and marveling at how it reflects the light so much the color doesn't even show. Maybe it will not be so shiny over time, or from a greater distance.

I'm not exactly sure how you are going to reconcile the natural animosity between Quakers and Mr. Fox without babysitting Quakers every minute. It should be interesting!!

That's definitely the question. The fox does not act like he is pining to get to Quackers, but today he was distracted by his fear of the roofers. I visited Quackers' prospective home today, and they will welcome him when I'm ready. There's other animals that may be eyeing poor Quackers: the pine marten, the bobcat, the owls, even the mountain lion. Now that the roofers are done, he'll be very vulnerable. (I'm doing my housecleaning at night so I can be with him in the yard all day.)

P.S. I think the roof looks great.

Thanks! Once it's done, I think most visitors won't notice the change from the old one unless we point it out.

Sheesh, Laura, you might as well have had kids. It is scary to think that people going on to your property might harm the fox when you are not there, thinking they are doing a "good" thing. Maybe you should put up a sign: If you see a fox, he is ours. Leave him alone. As for the goose, where will he go during the winter months? Ed and I recently visited a couple way out in the boonies for a sort of event. These guys have created a zoo in the woods with huge cages, exotic birds, monkeys, pathways to the various enclosures. I'll have to ask our friend, Clare, who took photos, to e mail me with them and then I can post.

It really is like acquiring a high-maintenance child, but the goose is nicer. The Drake Campground next to our post office has a burro, a mini horse, a llama, and various ducks and geese with pond for them. They will take Quackers in when we can't keep her any more, probably next week if I can bear the separation.

Mine was just the opposite before the yellow siding. Forest green house with brown roof. I don't like blue in the country either with so much green around.

You just went through your own house projects and know how nice it will be to have this done with.
reply by troutbend on July 2, 2012 5:17 AM ()
Or he just wanted his biscuits!!!

Exactly right, he probably won't hold a grudge.

The roof looks fabulous! I would be so pleased.... Love Quackers, too — what a sociable fellow. Seems like he's picked you. Maybe you better get used to it.
Now I'm wondering if the fox will accept the goose as a non-edible companion, but I have my doubts....

Quackers is a joy. I am contemplating a portable chicken wire enclosure we could put him in during the day and the garage at night. He'll have to go to his new home eventually, and I'll miss him. Maybe, just maybe, we could borrow him back during the summers.

Your pets are fighting for your attention--the fox feels he has the rights as he was there first.
Mmmmm--I don't know if it is good that the fox is not afraid of humans--even after being hit on the nose with a hat!
Looks like the goose found a home--wonder if he will stay or fly south comes the Fall!
comment by greatmartin on July 1, 2012 3:58 PM ()
I know what you mean, I was surprised the fox was that tame with a stranger, but maybe he was just hypnotized by the goose and forgot how to act.

Not sure if that roof is green or blue, but it's bright. I went with dark brown when I put metal on, but that light color is a totally different effect!

Green on a brown house is traditional around here. I'd thought about blue (this is a dark forest green when the light isn't reflecting on it), but my father's ghost would haunt me.
