"Do you want to save this window?"
"What do you think, is it worth saving?"
"I think it's a piece of junk. You'll want to install new windows with double panes."
"Okay, I saved those other windows, and I suppose this one isn't anything so special, so okay, go ahead and pitch it."
"Are you sure?"
"I'll take a picture of it, and that will be good enough to remember it by. The main thing is to capture the feeling I got when I looked at it and reproduce that in a new window. I'm not sure what we'd do with it, and I'm not a very crafty person who could come up with something clever."
By this time I'm ready to walk away, but he calls me back:
"You're really sure? I can save it for you."
"Well, how long would it take for you to remove the window part from the frame?"
"Five minutes, it would be no problem at all."
"All right, then. Please save that window."
Apparently, when he said it was a piece of junk he meant the frame part. So I guess he saved it, and I don't care either way.
I don't spend a lot of time over there, try to let him have his space. He does a good job of saving things out to ask me about, like the window, but he has a horrible work ethic, and is seldom here working. He's getting a flat fee for elevating the building, but the dumpster is charged by the week.
Tuesday I met with the engineer who is designing the foundation and whatever else we will need for the building permit. This includes a general sketch of the new addition to replace the one we are tearing down. It won't be a lot of design, but I'm switching the kitchen to the other side of the house and the bathroom will end up closer to the bedroom.
I hadn't given it a lot of thought, so I sketched out some ideas for the layout and did some window shopping for appliances and rock facings for the foundation. There are some decisions that have to made early on so the design can accommodate them. For one, if we are going to add a deck some day, maybe we can pour the footers for it at the same time as the foundation.
We found this Saturday Evening Post nailed into the bathroom wall:
The artwork is not by Norman Rockwell.
Here is the river after last weekend's storm. We were supposed to get a big storm last night, but it passed us by. Right now, the sun is shining and snow is falling.
