The Power of Nature

On the way to town from my house there is a place along the highway where an entire mountainside slipped into the river during the recent flooding. Before, it was covered with trees, as you can see on the edges of the scar.

This is how it started along the riverbank. That ledge got washed away, and then the river just nibbled on the footing of the slope until it was gone, and the rain-saturated slope slid away. To a smaller degree, this is what happened along the side of my upper driveway.

This is one of the flood sights that disturbs me the most - to think of that entire mountainside slipping away, and all the rocks, dirt, and trees going down the river to hit up against houses, bridges, and the riverbank.

You can't protect yourself and your property from every future misfortune, but how valuable it would be to have some kind on engineering/landscaping/structural assessment done to see what ways there are to fortify your specific property area. A flood like this removes or rearranges the underpinnings of everything.

I was counting on the river restoration coalition's master plan to provide that engineering advice, but the other day one of the experts said it will only provide 30% of what we need as landowners: not enough detail for us to know what we need to do on our land. So I'll have to find my own experts. I've got my eye on the hydrologists who are contracted to federal gov't agencies - I'm going to manipulate them into coming down here. I don't need a lot of work done, so it'll be a quick visit for them. That helps.

You just never know what a force she can be until you see her unleashed.

I've been thinking about what to do here to get through the next flood, and after looking at other properties, the What Could Have Happened here scares me a lot. What I want is 30 minutes with a hydrological engineer to look at my specific situation.

Mother Nature in all her fury!

Driving along the highway, people are so busy looking at the wrecked houses and those still dangerously hanging off cliffs they probably don't notice this whole mountainside is gone.
