Oh, Kevin Thanks for the Memory

Entry of the Gladiators (Thunder and Blazes)

Kevin got me thinking about the old music, and I was looking for something, and found a series of songs performed on player piano via those perforated rolls.

My grandparents had a player piano, and about 50 rolls for it. We loved playing it as kids - we had to pump the pedals to run it. The song lyrics were printed on the margin, so you could sing along if desired.

This was down at Ismay Trading Post in the Four Corners area.

My mother would get someone to give us a ride down there early in June, and come get us in July. We were homesick and bored - no TV, no telephone, and we were too young to do needlework. We weren't very old when my grandfather decided the piano bothered him so we couldn't play it any more, but I've never forgotten how much we enjoyed it.

After that, we entertained ourselves by reading the hundreds of Reader's Digest Condensed Books my grandad got at an auction, and sometimes my uncles would let us ride along with them as they did the farm and orchard chores.

My grandparents and their 9 children, 1969, their 50th wedding anniversary.

Thanks again, Kevin.

we had a wonderful piano player.I used to buy the rolls on top hits of that periods.
It was a nice family gathering around the piano and sing along with this.
We loved it.Thank you for sharing this.Martin says old.Of course what is his problem. Also it was a good way to learn playing the piano.

We too had a player piano for a while. It was very old and on its last legs and did not last. Then we got a regular upright, also old. The Salvation Army was throwing it out and my dad got a couple of itinerants to carry it up our stairs for a dollar each (It was the early 40s). I am old enough that remembering my childhood feels like I was born on another planet.

The upright at our house had an attachment inside that was like thumb tacks on strips of leather, one for each hammer inside the piano. There was an extra pedal that would lower it to give the piano that honky-tonk sound.

We loved sitting there while doing the pumping watching the keys moving by magic, and we'd put little dolls on the keyboard to see them hop around. I like how the perforations on the paper roll move around to produce the different notes.

The photograph brought back memories of all those print dresses women
wore then. That was when people did not think you should look fit and
buffed when you were old.

Grandmas were shapeless back then. At that time my grandma was around 60 to 65.

What a wonderful memory, Laura! Thank you for sharing it. I recall a clock maker/repairer my Dad knew and used and I would go with Dad to take a clock needing service or pick up a clock when the repairs were completed. The shop was a fairyland to me, loaded with clocks of all shapes and sizes, all over everywhere. The man also repaired music boxes, some very elaborate ones. That led him to customers who wished to change them from winding ones to electrified ones, which he did. I recall one visit to his shop when I discovered a great old player piano. Apparently he serviced them, too. The one I saw was being changed from a pedal drive to an electric one. But I always thought it would be more fun to pump the pedals rather than just flick a switch.
