Night Visitors

We have to bring the bird feeders in overnight because the raccoons have been getting into them.

This is the scene a week ago:

They climbed the roof supports - left sticky little hand prints all over them. They reach from the side and slide over the feeders over, not always knocking them to the ground. The first time we noticed it, each of us thought the other had slid the feeder over for some reason, but forgot to ask the other one.

Last night I caught one in the act. He was licking the base, and even reached a little hand-like paw into the jar that goes on top, getting the last bits of juice.

He was untroubled by the beam of the flashlight. This morning when I was looking for one of the feeders, it was nowhere to be seen, and finally I saw it up on the roof of the patio cover.

No, I am not going to encourage these guys.

Today is Roofer Reprise Day. There is a place on the house where they missed a couple fasteners (no, I did not go looking for this, just noticed it by accident), and they mentioned a flashing they want to do or re-do. Then, they are going to use the leftover metal to do a couple other buildings. It will be nice to have it all done because we are entering a rainy time. Come to think of it, we had a lot of rain last night, and I wonder if it's a good idea to put the metal on over a wet roof. It was so dry for so long, and now we've started having rain when it's bad for the roofs.

LOL. I saw one I have by me about a week or two ago, eating from the pile of bird food scraps I put out there each day after emptying my birds old food. He was HUGE! Had to have been about 35-40lbs.

This one is about half size, and I wonder where the rest of the family is. I am going to spray ammonia water around the base of the bird feeders in case that helps.

They are as destructive as they are cute. So are squirrels.

We have a ton of squirrels right now. The fox killed one the other day. The raccoon was here again last night, and broke the hanging hook on one of the feeders that I thought was up high enough. I guess nothing is safe from them.

live with the coyotes.

It's like in sports when a person is told to 'just be the ball' - live a mile in the coyote's skin. Hah!

Our wildlife experts say we should just learn to live the coyotes. They are here to stay. But we should worry about the raccoons. They are increasing like crazy and carry rabies and a lot of other diseases. I had a momma and three babies in the tree outside my bedroom window last month. I shone a flashlight at them and made noise until they left. I had a raccoon in my attic one time and don't want that to happen again.

I don't trust them, either. They used to get up on the roof and try to rip open the vents to get into the attic. I was leaning out the bathroom window spraying ammonia water as far as I could reach, and that seemed to keep them away.

Raccoons can be pesky, and they can maul and kill a dog, especially a small one, faster than one can imagine.

The foxes avoid them, and stay away from here when the raccoons are around. I'd rather have the foxes.

We've started bringing in the feeders at night, but it's a big job, have to get up at dawn to put them out again.

At least give them credit for their 'smarts'
comment by greatmartin on July 6, 2012 7:33 AM ()
They are too smart for their own good, a little too resourceful. I wonder if they ever live in the wild or just around cities and houses where they can scrounge. We usually don't have them in the summer when the campground around the corner is open.
