Movie: a Simple Plan

A Simple Plan starring Billy Bob Thornton.

I recorded this movie from cable so I could zip through the commercials, and might someday get it from Netflix to watch again.

Two brothers in Minnesota (with Arkansas accents) and the dumber brother's red-neck friend find a downed small airplane in the snowy woods. The pilot is dead and there is a bag of money - $4 million - in the plane.

Billy Bob plays the loser dumb brother who might have done okay on the family farm, but their father lost it to foreclosure of the two mortgages he took out to send the other brother to college to get the accounting degree that has gotten him the dead-end job at the small-town feed mill. And then their dad killed himself, which the college brother just finds out about (from Billy Bob so it could have been a lie) in the stress of trying to hide the $4 million; he'd always thought it was an accident.

The idea was that the smart guy would hold onto the money until spring when the plane will be found and if nobody comes around looking for it (maybe it is drug money) they will split it up. The problem is keeping Billy Bob and his alcoholic slacker friend from blabbing it around.

Meanwhile, the smart brother's wife, played by Bridget Fonda, who is very pregnant (in the movie) progresses from her initial reaction that found money belongs to someone and should be returned, to thinking it is the only thing that will take their lives from the dreary rut they're in to something they can be proud to raise their child in.

She's a real thinker and comes up with ideas that cause even more problems, such as Billy Bob accidentally killing someone and his brother having to make it look like a snowmobile accident, and the drunk red-neck blackmailing the brother because Billy Bob told him all about it.

It reminds me of Fargo and other Coen Brothers movies (this is directed by Sam Raimi) where there is lots of shooting, but it's very interesting how it all unfolds with plot twists galore, so it's not necessarily gratuitous killing - it could happen to any of us in similar circumstances.

Billy Bob Thornton is great. I want to see the movie. I would find it very difficult to kill anyone or anything except for mice and insects.

Aren't you a kick to remember my b.i.l. I have to show Ed
because out of the blue, sitting watching TV he'll say "I'm
really glad Don is out of my life." I' always say,
"move on, sweetheart".

Billy Bob is a VERY under-rated actor

It could happen to me? except the part about spending
any time at all with really dumb people. Also, when a tragic
death happens, I'd be inclined to report it, not cover it up.
The movie does sound gripping. I loved "Fargo".
