Parenting & Family > My Mother Was Pretty

My Mother Was Pretty

This is Mary Beth Hughes, a screen actress in the 1940s. This particular movie is "Blue, White and Perfect" a Mike Shayne story starring Lloyd Nolan. George Reeves (aka Superman) plays a good-guy G-man in this movie set mostly on a ship bound for alleged Hawaii.

Mary Beth Hughes plays Shayne's girlfriend. I was struck at her prettiness, and how my mother was pretty in that same way - a little bit more round-faced than is now fashionable.

I think this was when my mother was graduating from high school around 1945. That's Aunt Frances Keegan with her.

Aunt Frances lived in Phoenix or thereabouts. She often visited my mother's family in southwest Colorado, and we have several pictures of her. Several years ago, one of her grand-daughters contacted me looking for our branch of the family, and we are still in touch. Joanne has cerebral palsy and lives in a nursing home in the Los Angeles area.

Actresses with a similar look - Priscilla Lane. Also, later, Shirley Jones. Beautiful women.

Speaking of movies, I happened to see "My Week with Marilyn" last night. MM was portrayed as exceptionally insecure and very high-maintenance. It was a good movie, not without humor, but a sad portrait of a woman whose death has yet to be adequately explained as far as I know.

I'm a little slow--was Joanne the granddaughter who is now in the nursing home????

Yes, she's the one. We call each other on our birthdays, and I send her Christmas, Valentines, St. Patricks Day, etc. cards.

I guess she didn't make into the real big time, but she did make several movies. Nowadays, I think her stage name would have been catchier.

That photo of your pretty Mom and aunt is such a treasure!

That branch of the family lives in an area that even today is like a third-world country, but for all that, they liked to take pictures, so at least we've got some record of what they were up to.

Yes, she is very pretty and so is her movie star lookalike. My Mom was a
flapper and I have pictures of her with her stockings rolled to the knee.
My MIL told me that was pretty racy in the twenties.

Some of the pictures I have of my dad's family were taken in the 20s, but no flappers. I guess they missed out.

I can't believe I never heard of Mary Beth Hughes before. She is gorgeous. The photo of your mom and Aunt Frances is wonderful!

I'd never heard of her, either. It was so much fun to see a light-hearted comedy/mystery from 1942. It had to do with smuggling industrial diamonds to the enemy.
