Magpies and a Hawk

The fox was here for a snack the other day, and after he left, the magpies moved in to see if he'd left any scraps. I saw a flash of brown, and it turned out to be a small hawk who was hanging out with the magpies.

He was sitting on the fence.

and then one of the magpies was also on the fence, sidling toward him.

I was surprised that the magpies weren't frightened of the hawk, but it was acting a little confused. I don't know if you've ever seen smaller birds pestering a raven or crow in the air, but it reminded me of that.

Here are a couple of pictures from the local paper:

When you leave for Vegas, I hope Eloise travels as well as Buddy did.

Half of the time she traveled well. I want to think she learned something and the ride back to Colorado will go better than the bad part of the trip here.

That last picture is so gorgeous. It will be hard to leave such beauty for
the desert and the neon.

Oh, for sure. The desert can be beautiful, but our neighbors are too nearby, I go from an outdoors-centered life to the indoors.

We often see small birds chasing a bigger bird, protecting the nest.

This summer our tiny house wren was chasing a jay around the yard.

Soon you'll be leaving your feathered friends and Mr. Fox. Do you feel sad?
comment by tealstar on Oct 20, 2012 4:37 PM ()
Very sad to leave. It breaks my heart to think of the fox coming around after I leave, waiting and waiting, until he finally figures out we are taking a break, but always remind myself of the good times we've had visiting with him.

It's so peaceful, isn't it?

So what happened between the hawk and the magpie? Which one left first!!!
comment by greatmartin on Oct 20, 2012 11:06 AM ()
The hawk flew off with the magpie following it. I was sorry the hawk didn't come back.
