Life on the River: Working Through July

The dishwasher fixed itself after Mr. Troutbend poked around inside it without pulling it away from the counter. Gunk builds up in the little nooks and crannies, and we cleaned out some of that, but when he put it back together, it was still making noise the next couple of times we ran it - a lot of noise, and we could hear something clacking around in there – like a loose part being buffeted by the water. Sometimes when it pumps out, water backs up into the sink, and I noticed some stuff – looked like minced onion in the sink after it had run. We decided him poking around in there loosened something that finally worked its way out, and now its working fine. That’s all a person could hope for. Now we rinse everything really well before we put it in there, even though we’re not supposed to have to.

I am working on an intense spreadsheet project – going on the county assessor website to find the assessed values of homes along certain parts of the river so we can show the value of the structures that will be saved is more than the cost to fix the river so it doesn’t wipe them out in a future flood. It’s grueling, but I’m slogging through it. I enjoy that kind of project, but doing 10 miles of the river would have been more fun than doing 21 miles of it. I might finally get done with most of it tonight, but will spend the next few days polishing it.

I have been getting lots of phone calls to reserve the rental cabin. Many of them are referred by the pot-smoker motel down the river from here. She advertises on the Marijuana-friendly website. We still have our usual guests, there are some motorcycle riders who come almost every year. They are from North Platte, NE. They left a bunch of food – they’d bought food for a ribeye steak dinner, and then ended up dining out. There’s 4 nice ribeye steaks ($44), 6 big ears of corn on the cob, and a packet of Knorr rice side dish mix. And about a case of beer – three different kinds of beer. I write it down in a book, and we’ll put some of that kind of beer over there next time they come back.

I prepare corn on the cob by leaving it in the husks and microwaving it for 8 minutes. I cut off the big end and shake the hot corn right out of the husk – all the silk stays inside there. It’s my favorite way because there is so much conflicting information about how to cook it water: add salt, don’t add salt. Add sugar, don’t add sugar.

We have so many mice there year – Eloise has caught a few inside the house. There is a live trap in the house next door, and we catch one just about every day. There was a spare trap in the garage, not even down on the floor and mice were getting into it. Caught 8 mice in 3 days.

Keeping the hummingbird feeders filled is a full-time job. We are going through 7 or 8 pounds of sugar a day. We buy 50 to 75 pounds each time we go to town, don't want to run low, and we rip right through them.

I microwave my corn too. Four minutes for one ear. Sure beats picking all the silk off thread by thread, doesn't it?

I was surprised at how well it works.

Don scrubs our dishes clean (so clean we don't really need a dish washer) before putting them in the dishwasher.

Tonight I broke one of our special plates trying to do all that pre-rinsing because I didn't want Mr. YouKnow to think I didn't care about keeping bits of food out of the dishwasher.

The week before Frontier Days is Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, and then they all come see you. I have been getting lots of calls about cabin rentals, referred by the motel downstream that advertises on the pot-friendly cabin rentals website. We are booked just about solid for August, something that has never happened before.

Who would have thought the tiny hummingbird could put away such large amounts of sugar? drmaus has a great idea. In NY, we had mice in the loft and Jay set traps and caught them. He put up a score sheet, updating from time to time. At one point, it said "Stantons 7 -- Mice -- 0. The meter reader kept staring at it as he chatted with Jay one morning. It was hilarious. Your spreadsheet project sounds really complex (and daunting). Good luck with it. I'll try the corn recipe. I was using Green Giant canned corn for Ed, but fresh corn would be better.

It has been a boom year for mice, and I'll bet Mr. YouKnow has the score in his head. He also keeps track of how many thistle plants he pulls up.

dramus has a fine idea. The bears that steal the sugar worry me but I
guess bears are to you as tornados are to me...just something you learn
to live with.

Our canyon Facebook group reports on the bear sightings so folks have an idea what area of they are in. The mother and cubs are 6 miles from here, headed east last we heard. I don't know if the one who was here drinking from the bird feeders was a different bear - we didn't see the cubs that time, so probably was, and we don't know where it is. It's always nice to see wildlife like that once in awhile so we know nature is okay, but we'd just as soon they didn't hang around and cause trouble.

You are a busy lady!! Just read a magazine article about how LV is rebounding from the recession but not to like it was but more family, non--gambling oriented--even said some of the new hotels and remodeled hotels don't have gambling!!!! That's not LV!!

The emphasis in Las Vegas now is expensive night clubs and high-end restaurants and shopping. Most of the sights along the Strip have been replaced by those things. It hurt the gambling economy that the major casino companies built sister resorts in Macau - the Asian high rollers don't need to come to Las Vegas to visit the Venetian or the Wynn, so there is less gambling and more partying.

Microwaving the corn makes the outer stuff easier to come off? That would be great, I'll have to try it. And with your hummingbird farm, maybe you should film it and advertise it as a feature of your cabins. Then the sugar is a business expense...

The corn slides out better if the husks were moist - I run the ears of corn under the tap before zapping so it gets steamy in there. The sugar already is a business expense. Having 200 hummingbirds to watch is one of the advertised guest amenities here at Brown Trout Lane Cabins.
