Life from Here

It got cold here in Las Vegas, a couple of hard freeze warning nights, and this week we'll be back to 60 degrees.

Wednesday I have to 'attend' a webinar from Colorado, and Thursday is driving day, 13 hours back to Colorado. I will visit my uncle in a nursing home in southwest Colorado, so am taking a very scenic route through Monument Valley to get there. I usually make a wrong turn when I head across unfamiliar country, and that's not all bad because I'm never truly lost, but tends to add a few hours to the drive.

Miss Eloise Kitty doesn't know that she will soon be riding shotgun across the desert. I would love it if we didn't have to put ourselves through the couple hours of her carrying on and panting until she gives up and settles down to enjoy the ride. Once she gets back to the mountains she will once again be able to go outside to hunt rodents, and I'm sure the mice have taken over the house so that will keep her busy.

Speaking of back home in Colorado, the wind has been blowing very hard, and I am anxious to see if any trees that lost their anchoring soil in the big flood have blown over.

Jeri sent me a fancy knitting book for Christmas and I have been working on one of the scarf patterns. It's tricky, but challenging in good way, and in between other things I have been planning my vegetable garden. It's always a challenge to find crops that mature in an short growing season and cooler nights. Last year I didn't do a very good job at planning, and my garden was slap-dash, with flowers crowding out the vegetables, but it was pretty, and I didn't mind so much. All I want from it is some tomatoes, some cucumbers, and three to five zucchini squash a week. And a few radishes might be nice.

Cats don't often like traveling in cars. Now that Megan is gone, I bought Erin a doggie car seat and he rides up front with me--in his seat. He seems to like it. It might work for a cat?

A little chill pill might not be amiss. My son had to drug the cats when they moved across country.

Good luck on both your travels and your gardening!

Believe it or not, my radishes didn't bulb out. I was looking at them last summer thinking about easy they should be to grow, and one of these days I'll research it and find out where I went wrong. Once we stop for gas, Eloise calms down and becomes a different cat. I have tried pulling over very early in the trip to fool her, but that doesn't seem to work: she has to get her two or three hours of carrying on in before she decides to enjoy the journey.

What's a webinar? Hey I'm new at all this tech stuff!

It's a seminar-type presentation via the Internet: the powerpoint plus the audio, and remote participants can type in questions in real time for the speakers to answer. Often, they are broadcast from live events, and I always try to be there physically, because you'll be there, and someone will say: 'the audio is messed up on the webinar' but they keep talking, so the remote folks are missing out. Plus, there is networking and sometimes good snacks at the live event.

I suspect many of the webinars I've participated in don't have a live audience, and even the speakers call in from somewhere, which is even better, because the entire thing is geared for the Internet. The more I do, the more I appreciate them because for a couple hours' worth of sitting at the computer, I don't have to leave home, and the people who put them on are getting more skilled so there are less technical glitches. A lot of the webinars are saved and posted on the Internet to be watched later, without the ability to ask questions, of course, but always contact info so we could email the speaker if we wanted to.

Another thing I've done is the call-in meeting, where it's broadcast via speaker phone. I have to call a phone number then enter a code and I'm conferenced in. These aren't as good because there are always people who don't speak up.

We will be worried until you and Eloise are finally home. My fingers will
be crossed all day Thursday.

We're going to practice putting her harness on today.

That is one long journey. Consider a traveling sedative for Her Meowness -- ask a vet. Radishes will grow anywhere --they were the only successful "crop" I had when I tried a Victory Garden in 1943. My mother (who knew such things) laughed and laughed. I'd love to grow tomatoes but have failed. I haven't been getting to my long ago chosen projects. I envy your focus. Stay safe.
