Keeping up with the Birds

We are very busy feeding the hummingbirds this summer. There are about 30 at the red cabin, 30 at the brown cabin, and 50 here at the house. We count them at dusk and dawn when they all show up at one time. The weather affects how much they eat: they load up before a rain storm, and slow down on a hot day.

Our feeders hold about 3 cups each, and each one has to be refilled two or three times a day.

Most of our birds are broadtails (red throats), and we have a few rufous (orange throats), and the other day we saw a calliope. Their throat is striped, and they are a smaller bird.

Here is a rufous guarding a feeder.

There are supposed to be hummingbirds around here but it is a very rare occasion that I see one. I try to plant the kind of flowers that they like. I used to have a feeder but that didn't seem to work either.

Can see myself sitting on verandah looking over the garden watching Cath feed the birds. TEAH
Cath always feeds birds, up the river its ducks when we lived at the caravan park she fed the corella wild parrots with bread , she even had one taking it from her hand ,, the overnighters took photos of her feeding them.

It'd be fun to have some parrots around here.

What a way to spend a morning, counting humming birds. Wish I could be there.

I also liked the morning we sat outside with a fly swatter and took swipes at the occasional fly.

My dad's wife bought a cute little stand to hold a feeder, but it isn't very tall, and the feeder ends up at flower level. They couldn't use it because his outside cat was catching the birds, but we've got it over at the other cabin right now, since it is cat-less, and the birds seem to like it.

I don't think I have ever seen a hummingbird here--and I look!!!

Have read rivergirl on the other site? She has found a baby robin and is taking care of it.

Your season for them down there is probably in the spring as they pass through on their way to northern breeding areas. Some day you might see one visiting some bright flowers. I'll go look for the baby robin thing. I think our bird that nested on the rake has abandoned the nest.
