Found It!

I just read a news story about a woman in Alabama who lost her class ring 43 years ago in the course of a softball game. Her son-in-law offered to look for it, and knowing the general area where the game was, he found it in 10 minutes.

We had a similar story in our family. 27 years ago, we heated our house in Denver with a wood burning stove, and Mr. Troutbend harvested dead trees from my folks' property, where I live now.

After we got home from a weekend, he realized he was missing his gold wedding band. We asked my dad to look for it in case he'd left it in the bedroom where we stayed, but it never showed up.

Several years later, he was up on top of that same mountain cutting down another tree, and there was his ring! It had come off when he removed a glove.

Many years ago I lost the diamond out of my engagement ring. Later I thought it came out when I was kneading bread dough for a bake sale. Someone got a great deal on that loaf of bread, but probably didn't even know it.

Oh my goodness. That would drive a person nuts thinking about where it could have ended up.

I just saw a story about a fisherman finding a man's $30,000 prosthetic leg in the Gulf of Mexico.

Well it has something to do with the fallen tree, what it looks like and my warped mind--ENOUGH!!

Had a great pair of gold earrings for 20 years. Dropped one in my sis's driveway. Thought of the driveway three weeks later and found it there but it had been run over. I had it repaired and now I have really lost it again -- I think at the Fort Myers airport. I save single earrings and sometimes put the ones with the stud on clothing as decoration. I loved those earrings. They went with everything.

Some of the things that are gone, I tell myself that I'll always know where it is: Lost!

Years ago, in the summer, I lost my keys; car key, three house keys, garage key, luggage key. I hunted everywhere for them with no luck. Fortunately DH had copies of them all and he had copies made for me. The next spring I was digging in the garden in front of my daughter's bedroom and you know what I found. All I can surmise is that she was playing with my 'forbidden' keys and thought she heard me coming so she tossed them out the window and promptly forgot about them.

Sometimes I think about the reconstruction someone could make from something I did - like how that shred of ham ended up caught in the car door handle - wouldn't CSI have a field day with that?

How cool it that?! There is an old Catholic tradition that when you lose something, you are supposed to say a prayer to St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost things, asking him to find it for you. Then you are supposed to stop thinking about it, and stop looking for it and stop worrying about it, just have faith that the saint will find it for you. But I think it has something to do about freeing your conscious mind from the task and obsessing about it, which let your subconscious mind lead you to it, eventually. In my experience, it is surprising how often it works.

I have this theory that throwing something just like it in the general area the first one was last seen will find it, because the second one will land by the lost one. Hasn't worked so far, but I still do it once in awhile.

So were we! Then, he misplaced it for a few years when we moved to Las Vegas, and finally found it and started wearing it all the time.
