Hello from the River

Here's what's happening here on the Big Thompson this week:

An elk came to visit.

A robin is sitting on her nest.

The woodwork and doors at the new cabin - it's going so slowly I hesitate to call it 'progress.'

Smart birds. They know how to raise independent children.
What are your rates for the nest?

Love to see big wildlife so close. What a great spot. Miss the fox and the gooose.

The other day we were talking about how much we miss that goose. He was such good company.

I remember that it gets a little chilly in August at your house. Wish we could share some of it.

It cools off at night most nights during the summer and later in August we can tell fall is on the way, but it can get really dry.

We spot the young birds of various species because they follow the parents around the yard demanding food, and the parents ignore them.

So that's where my elk friend disappeared to--guess the summers were too hot for him here!

Up in Estes Park they see elk every day, we get one or two a year, so this was a nice surprise.

That elk is very well fed. And the bird looks all too comfortable. Do they lay eggs this late in summer? Reminds me I have to go tear down the ivy that keeps climbing the wall, before a bird builds a nest in it again.

We have dippers (Ouzels) who build their nest under the bridge and we can hear the babies squawking every time they spot the parents bringing food, and there's definitely two batches of them a year. Once these robins hatch out, we'll see if the nest get re-used, or abandoned so we'll know we should remove the old nests (fly catcher and robin so far) so the space is available for next year.

I was fortunate enough for the first time to have robins build a nest in the lilacs at shoulder level. Got some great nest-cam video! The coolest part was when mom stopped the free food and the babies kept begging. Humans can learn a lesson from birds as well as other animals.
