The Gov't

Yesterday the FEMA inspector came to my property to decide how much money I deserve from the gov't to restore access to my home. Their standard is whether an ambulance could get there. Many of the inspectors won't inspect your home if an ambulance couldn't drive up to it even before restoration, but they claim they are making an exception for this particular disaster and doing the little bit of walking.

He had to hike over this boulder field that used to be my driveway:

and across the yard.

This is near the end of the bridge - shows how far the road was dredged out by the flood waters.

Anyhow, they ended up offering $4500 to fix all this. I don't think the required amount of fill dirt can be delivered for that amount, so I'm appealing it, but first I have to find a contractor to get an estimate from.

I hired a couple of helpers to help me get my small red cabin cleaned out, and that's a story for another time. I'm glad it's done.

Am I understanding that $4,500 is just for access to your property, including repairs to your bridge and your private drive, and nothing for your other property damage? Glad you are appealing that amount. That might be enough for the materials/fill dirt/etc., but I would think the labor would cost about that same amount. Not that I have a real clue, but it seems low to me.

The other property damage can be covered by an SBA business loan, and this $4500 is tied to my personal residence because it's the only access to my permanent residence. Of that amount, $1699 has to be spent on a culvert, and $493 has to be spent on a pipe to support the electric wires going into the house (they require receipts to prove the money was spent on those things), leaving $2308 to fix hundreds of feet of road and bring the grade up to the level of the bridge so we could drive across it. If we somehow find someone else to fix the embankment (estimated cost $193,000), the rest of the road is estimated to cost $25,000 just to be able to drive up to the house, nothing fancy, and much more work required. I really don't understand what those FEMA people are thinking, and they are very snotty about it, as if I am a parasite trying to pull a fast one. I wish I was, because then I could just give up and go live in my home as if nothing had happened.

$4500?? Are they JOKING??? I am so sorry.

I really don't know how they think that is going to make any difference given what it's really going to cost.

Now with the shutdown the IRS is not working so you have a little more time for gathering your paperwork. Just making a little lemonade.

Well there's a thought. I wonder if that nice lady from the IRS is now enjoying a vacation in beautiful Estes Park, or went home today.

Funny--I can comment on mybloggers but I can't post a blog! I KNOW--IT'S THE FLOOD!!! Tell FEMA you need more money so you can read my blobs!

I would challange them to do it at that price--being the governmnet they would probably spemd $45,000!!!!

I shudder to think what the shutdown is costing us - last time it was $1.5 billion - seems the money could have been spent more wisely.

It is so horrible to rip out carpet and must have been worse damp. I hope
you can save some of the furniture.

Strangely, the carpet had sort of a coating of dirt, but underneath it was clean but wet, so not all that nasty. That kid just went at it. He didn't have a lot of initiative, but once he started on something, he did okay. If there was electricity I might have tried to dry it out without removing it, but not sure that'd work.
