Gardener's Quiz

Looking at an August 1974 issue of the Kitchen-Klatter Magazine, I came across a Gardener's Quiz, and am struck by all the vegetable varieties I've never heard of. The person who came up with this quiz must have had a seed catalog handy.

It could be we're still eating some of them, but are not apprised of the varietal names. I've googled all of these and inserted links so you can read more about them. The only one I couldn't find online is the first one.

1. What vegetable has a name like a city in Japan? (Tokyo Bell Peppers)

2. What fruit has the same name as a famous falls? ((Niagara Grapes)

3. What fruit tree has the same name as a famous popular singer? (Bing Cherries)

4. What fruit tree has the same name as a TV star? (Jonathan Winters)

5. What fruit tree is like well-to-do people? (Wealthy Apple)

6. What peach has a girl's name? (Alberta Peach) aka Elberta

11. What variety of blueberries is named like a town in California? (Berkeley)

12. What variety of strawberries is like a member of the government? (Senator Dunlap)

Jonathan apples were my favorite but I can't find them any more. Associating the name with Jonathan Winters is kind of labored, sort of desperate to find a link to something, anything. I have heard of bing cherries and Alberta pears sound familiar. The rest are a mystery. But many varieties I knew in my young years are nowhere to be found now. And don't ask me to name them.

I think at the time it was written (1974) Jonathan Winters was more of a household name.

My pie cherries come in two varieties: Montmorency and Balaton. Thinking about all this makes me think I need to read more seed catalogs. My garden did a lot better this summer, and I'd like to think it was due to thoughtful plant selection as opposed to dumb luck with the weather. Won't know until next year.

I left his last name off, but went in and changed it after I saw your comment. It makes more sense now.

You know I'm a foodie, but I was surprised at how many of these I'd never heard of.

All I know about gardening is your plant, pray and wish them a good morning everyday--seems to work for me!!!

Remember when restaurant menus would list name-brand ingredients, for example: not just pasta, it was American Beauty pasta? Then, it seemed like in the early 70s food prices went up a lot and it was all about generic. It seems like we lost touch with what can be special about food, a step toward globalization.

Fun! And I didn't know the fresh, pretty Jonathan Apples filling a peck sack on my kitchen counter were TV stars!

Jonathans are so good for pie, and we can't buy them in the stores around here or even the farmers markets. This isn't an apple-growing area, so the best thing is to find someone who has a tree in their yard, and people hardly bother with that any more. My excuse is they won't grow at this altitude, because otherwise I'd be guilty of 'hardly bothering.' Hah!
