Fish and Mouse Story

There is a good-sized trout near that riverbank, near the left edge of the picture.

Mice can really swim, and when I dump them out of my life trap into the river, some of them have managed to reach the shore and get out to dry land. I hate to think of them coming back into the house.

This morning when I dumped a mouse into the river, it started swimming valiantly for the shore, and I thought it was going to make it, when all of a sudden a trout came up and pulled it under. I could see the mouse underwater, its foot in the fish's mouth. The current washed them out of sight down the stream, so I don't know the outcome.

It was a medium size mouse, and a medium size fish. I don't think the fish's mouth would be large enough to swallow it whole, but I hope the fish gave that mouse a hard time.

I get mice in my crawl space in the late fall. If I don't get rid of them the first time I detect one, they will take over. They multiply overnight. Traps and D-Conn are my friends.

I wish we could use D-con once in awhile, but we don't want the fox to eat a poisoned mouse. Fortunately I don't mind using the live traps. We've been catching a mouse a day inside the house and none in the garage, surprisingly.

what happened to the cat?

The cat died the first week of April - I posted about it. Sorry that you have forgotten that, he was our only child.

I have forgotten what it means to have lakes, streams, etc., All we have is an ocean!!!

I would love to spend a month or two at the ocean. Watching water never gets old.

That makes me sad. I understand not wanting them in your house, but that story makes me really sad.

These deer mice we have here carry the fatal hantavirus. There are several deaths a year in this part of the country, it is spread by their pee and poop and we are exposed to it any time we clean our garage or anywhere they have been. So I don't have a lot of empathy for mice.

Is that river in your backyard? If so, you & I have a lot in common. My large creek/small river doesn't have the rocky cliffs but it reminds me of home. As far as mice are concerned, they're a major pain in the butt here (along with chipmunks, skunks, raccoons & squirrels) but don't come into the house until the Fall. That's when I miss my old cat so I put out traps. I don't like to kill anything but it comes down to a matter of respect - you don't see me rooting through their nests outside or eating their food do you? Cute or not - sorry . . .

Yes, it's the Big Thompson River, runs in front of our house. We get mice year-round, and they come in waves - I'll catch 12 in 3 nights, and then there aren't any for a couple of weeks. We always worry about the rodents eating through the electric wires in the attic and causing a fire. Last year we had to replace a telephone wire here in the house. I wanted the electrician to hang it up from the rafters so it wasn't just lying there handy, and he didn't want to do it - said the animals would see that as a challenge and swing from it. I think he just didn't want to do it.

When you live in the country, it is a constant fight against mice. There
was a baby mouse on my porch but I just didn't have the heart to try to
kill him. Unfortunately, he was cute.

Those baby mice are adorable but when I see them, I remember they will quickly grow up and not be cute. The other day I heard one inside my stove chewing on something.
