Sometimes when I sign up for a new login/password on a website there are security questions. I remember back many years ago when 'what is your mother's maiden name' was considered a good security question. I don't like using that one because it's not that hard for a determined identity thief to figure out the answer.

Lately, the sites have been providing a list of security questions to choose from: where I went to high school, what was my high school mascot, in what city did I meet Mr. Troutbend, what city did we get married in, name of my kindergarten teacher, first pet, first street I lived on: Pick one. These questions are okay by me because the answers are fairly cut and dried.

I remember one site where the questions were along the lines of: what is your favorite band, what is your favorite beverage, what is your favorite color. And my answer is: I don't know.

I like several kinds of music, so could not choose between them, much less a favorite band, and both tea and coffee have a place in my life.

Some people are very positive about liking blue or yellow or purple the best, but for me any color and hue has its place.

If I'm forced to choose one of these questions, I have to write down the answer because I will forget what I said if I ever need it.

It's not that I'm indecisive. I know when blue is the color I want, and when yellow would be right. And there are some things I know I dislike and have no problem picking against, like that fake-tasting raspberry tea, and rap music.

This is an art print by Sueellen Ross. I paid $30 for it at the antique mall. I like it because we have two or three mallards like this on our river here.

Just posting it here to show to Jeri.

I'm chuckling because I also encountered recently this version in security questions: "Who/What is your LEAST favorite teacher/car/etc.?" I had/have many favorites, and really don't keep a catalog of least favorites in my head.

That's hilarious to use Least - I would struggle with that, too. Let's see, what do I hate? Let me count the ways.

I love that you have mallards. They are, I think an inland bird. Trade you birds for a while?

It'd be fun to trade birds. I don't think our mallards have a nest around here this year, unfortunately, but they do visit once in awhile.

I used to use my mother's maiden name but it was an odd spelling and for years, I used the wrong one. Then one day I heard her say it so distinctly that I knew I had been spelling it wrong. Woe. A bank, for instance, won't let you choose your security question. They always want to know your mother's maiden name so now I have to remember which spelling to use.

That happens to me a lot. I can never remember if I answered that my high school mascot was the bear or the bears.

Between passwords and security questions I have pages and pages of paper that the Internet was going to cut down on!!

I enter mine in a Word document I call Passwords. Any determined hacker can find it. What, me worry?
reply by tealstar on May 5, 2012 7:51 AM ()
Simple just isn't that simple any more.

I kinda felt safe with my maiden last name because NO ONE in their right mind would want to steal my identity, but now that my last name is more common I need to be more aware...

It's too bad that we have to be thinking of this stuff all the time.

One of those sites asked for my mother's birthplace. I put the wrong town. So now, I always have to try to remember which wrong answer I gave. I have a pair of mallards living somewhere near me. They walk to my yard in the afternoon. I put out birdseed for them, hoping they get to it before the chipmunks and squirrels do.

That's hilarious, but a good ruse to fool the hackers. I'd be in the same boat as you - would struggle to remember it. Your mallards, and my fox (not in the same place and time) - make it worth getting up in the morning.

I hated using my mother maiden name. Why,it was so hard to spelled
So I think that would be safe for a spell.

Yes, it'd be great if someone had one of those 'buy a vowel' names that nobody would ever guess.
