Fall Break

20 students from Hastings College in Nebraska gave up their fall break to come to Colorado to help with cleaning up after our big flood. After weeks of setbacks and delays, I can hardly believe that something went right for once.

Not only did they move all the flood-soaked cabin contents to the highway for pick up on Monday, they combed the river banks and found loads of junk washed down from upstream.

They also cut and stacked a bunch of firewood for me, sorely needed.

How long will that wood last? A while I hope. Is that about a cord? How nice of those kids to help. Ask and ye shall receive....

It probably is about a cord. I think if I had a fire every day, it might last a couple of months. It'd be better if I had a wood stove or a fireplace insert that would put out more heat than the fireplace, and I'm not very good at building a fire, so it takes some doing to get one going and keep it burning. We're in for a cold spell, so I'll see how my current system works out.

That great! So necessary to get cleaned up before winter.... which isn't far off.....

Oh, I had visions of all that sitting out there all winter long, just festering. That was layer number one, and the next layer probably will have to wait. It is mostly trees, pieces of trees, and grass wrapped around stationary objects.

What great news. I bet you had a ball talking with them.

I was so busy driving the truck back and forth, barely had time to chat. We just worked flat out, but it was fun seeing them interacting with each other.

There IS hope for us all.

And that was one area I'd given up on. Just goes to show, doesn't it?

I hadn't planned on the wood. When I thanked the organizing lady, she said if I need more, the local church people will be happy to come back.

That must have been a big help and a big relief---looks like they also did a great job cutting all that wood! Things are getting better!

I'm so used to coping and managing whatever comes up on my own, help like this is unexpected.

What wonderful people! They are a treasure and I wish we had more young
people like them. I am vicariously grateful for the help they gave you
and the wood was such a great bonus.

Thanks to that wood, it's a toasty 58 degrees in here right now.
