Eloise and the Fox

The new fox was here this morning, and I went outside to take pictures of him.

He was standing on the other side of the back patio, and Eloise escaped through the slow-closing screen door. She shot out there in a streak, and the fox took off running. She chased him a long ways up the mountain behind the house, and I worried that she wouldn't stop. What if she just kept going and got lost?

But finally, I could see a flash of white up in the forest, and knew she was coming back. In this picture, she is that white triangle at the base of the big tree that is past the edge of the snow. Now she really thinks she's something.

After dark, the fox came back, and Eloise was ready to get out there and chase him again. I'll have to be extra vigilant any time he's here to keep her inside.

I would have thought the fox would have been fearless of a cat... Interesting!

I think that other fox and Buddy the Cat would have had a little standoff until one of them blinked and went the other way because they eyeballed each other through the window for a couple of years. This fox probably didn't know exactly what that was running at him, but he didn't stay around to find out.

So glad your wildlife survived the flood.

I don't see them around like I used to - just the tracks in the sand or snow, and it sure was nice to see that fox, and that it acted a lot like the old fox. I have three sassy blue jays and two raucous ravens that come around for cornbread every morning. I pretend the jays call my name.

Me too! He brightens my day.

I am more concerned about the fox being scared off than Eloise's self-image in this case. I love the kitty, but I love the fox too.

He came back last night, so I don't think he was intimidated. She saw him out there in the dark and was all ready to go out and run him off.

My goodness! I did not know that a cat was not fox-food. Eloise is a brave kitty!

Foxes don't usually eat cats because they put up such a fuss and are too much trouble. I've seen and heard about cats going out and hanging out with visiting foxes. I would worry about rabies, even though the cats have their shots.

What a boost to Eloise's ego!

Now she thinks she's the Whole Package: defender of the home indoors and out.

I can just picture Eloise as a streak of fury chasing that fox. I think
she believes it is a dog and she is going to have to share her home. The
cute little devil!

I'm trying to think whether she has ever encountered a dog since we got her. I don't think so. But a dog wouldn't take off like that fox did, and she wouldn't chase after it like that.
