Credit Shenanigans

I am so irritated with LL Bean because last year they switched the bank behind their VISA card to Bank of America, and then this year dumped Bank of America (BOFA) and went with a different credit card bank.

This would be okay, except my credit history and credit limit from the LL Bean card stays with B of America, and to get a new LL Bean card I need to apply for it as if it was brand-new credit.

Today in the mail came my Bank of America VISA card, telling me I've been a member since 1997 and I have a $39,000 line of credit.

I don't trust or like Bank of America for a number of reasons that I won't go into here.

I have been looking at information about FICO credit scores and the affect of canceling a credit card and/or getting a new one. Bottom line: it hurts your credit score somewhat to do that.

One Better Business Bureau article I read said that if you cancel a credit card, make sure you have a new line of credit to replace the amount you are canceling.

Well, shoot. Not that I intend to use this VISA card very much. Before the fall out with LL Bean, ordering from their catalog with it resulted in free shipping, but I haven't ordered from them in several years. And I had the card as a fall-back in case there was some problem with my Mastercard or the VISA card that is for my business.

Why do I care about my credit score? Well, for one thing we got something from Farmers Insurance one time telling us we didn't get the best rate on our car insurance because of our credit score. That really pissed me off because our houses are paid for, our cars are paid for, we pay off our credit cards every month, etc. etc. We have had mortgages in the past and paid them off, so it's not as if we haven't displayed the ability to handle credit wisely. The only cause I could think of was that we changed our address from Colorado to Las Vegas.

So I have to decide whether to activate this stinking BOFA credit card even though I think their business practices are the lowest of the low and I don't trust them for a moment because someday I might need that $39,000 line of credit if Mr. Troutbend is kidnapped and there is a ransom demand and I am afraid of hurting my stupid credit score by canceling that card.

I really just needed to vent about this, so thanks for 'listening.' Chime in you have any advice.

I do know that you tend to rate higher in the credit scores more often if you have some kind of a loan going on, if payments are being paid on time. That's why so many people who have paid off their houses will take out a second mortgage or a loan, why some people will trade-in for a new car and finance at least part of the cost of the new one, just to prove that they have credit and they can still maintain good credit. Paying something off does not show the ability to have credit, it just shows you can purchase something, especially if paid upfront (not financed) or paid off earlier than the designated pay-off date. It's also helped some people's credit to take out a new credit card, but to already have something on it so they can make payments, they use the new card to pay off an old one. The amount of the old one appears on the new card's bill, so payments need to be paid on that, thus continuing the proof of credit and the level (good or bad) of credit.

I can't even believe the lines of credit that we could get if we wanted them. You could honestly buy a house. Credit cards are scary to me.

I understand your mistrust for BOFA. They lost a near $600 deposit of mine years ago. Did you know that the slip of paper the teller hands you when you make a deposit does not constitute a proof of deposit/ legal receipt? After losing that fight I closed that account and have not walked through their doors since.

So true. I just got a notification from Citi card that I could go hog wild, which I don't intend to do.

I let Ed read all the fine print, although I've gotten better
at it. We have our account with BOA as it bought out the bank
we started with it, so we just stayed. It's in the woods.
Sign on the door when it's closed says, "Gone fishin'." The locals
who run it are nice. We shred all the credit card offers no
matter where they come from. We have about 4 cards now. That's
enough. We have a couple that have absorbed balance transfers at
lower rates. But we don't use these cards for new charges because
that would be at their regular rate. They hate when you do that.
Also I have a New York Times credit union Visa and I use it for
sentimental reasons for small stuff so that I am never hung up
for their higher interest rate.
