We're Counting

A vehicle pulled up on the other side of the bridge this morning and I went out to see if it was a fisherman. A guy was padlocking a traffic counter box to our street sign post, and I pointed out to him that this is a dead-end, private drive, so we don't get a lot of traffic worth counting, particularly coming across the bridge because if we get fishing club members, they don't drive that direction.

He said it's a CDOT (Colo Dept of Transportation) project to do with bridges, and ours was on his list. My friend C. Karen works for CDOT so I emailed her about it, and she said while there IS a counting project underway, it shouldn't be on private land like ours, because CDOT doesn't maintain our road or bridge. People there got riled up about it, she said, and even looked us on via GPS to see if we should be included or not.

We think it's pretty funny to do a 48 hour study of how many times we drive across our bridge - today it was a wheelbarrow, a push lawnmower, a riding mower, and the pickup truck.

This is one of my favorite pictures of the bridge, taken in the fall of 2006. That's Baby Chalek walking across there, but looks like our late cat Buddy.

Another example of beaureaucratic, mind-numbing stupid-think. It's a beautiful spot -- too bad that counter doesn't take photos.

We don't think the count was very accurate, watching the changes when we used the bridge. Turned out the state is responsible for the health of our bridge because later some maintenance guys showed up. That was news to us, it's the first time we've ever seen then down here.

You made me chuckle with the one day total of the bridge crossers. Are there trolls under your bridge going trip trap trip trap Who goes over my bridge?

Could be trolls under there with the dippers (birds). We had a smaller bridge over another stream when I was a kid, and my cousins still talk about playing that troll game on it. We decided the counter is not counting accurately because he drove the truck over it twice today, and it only went up one number. He thinks it's because there is a sharp turn right after the bridge, so the car wheels are not hitting the hose straight-on.

I understand the necessity of measuring bridge traffic in order to assess what public bridges need will need repair when, but including your private bridge is a GPS or paper record goof.

What is your bridge undergirding made of? How old is it? Did your Dad construct it? I'm into bridges. My grandfather was a civil engineer and built them.

It's concrete, and there are steel crossbeams going crosswise. The ends are on poured concrete buttresses. The county installed it in 1977 or so after the big flood that took out everyone's bridges. I don't think there was a choice as to whether they would install it or not - the land owners had to accept it and pay $29,000 per bridge. The old bridge was all wood built on concrete piers covered with big rocks, and was better looking.

It's the little things that make our day. The count is up to 6 now and they will pick it up tomorrow.

And do they count the cats, foxes, snakes, etc., that cross the road
comment by greatmartin on May 30, 2012 9:22 AM ()
That'd be so much more interesting. I want to put one of those wildlife cameras on the bridge to see which of the foxes come across it. (And the bear.)

Governments spend lots of cash looking for make-work projects.

Think how much they'd save if they'd have called and asked us how much general use the bridge gets, and then they could decide if it was worth counting.
