The Road by My House

This series of videos was made in 2010 by what sounds like a southern couple in a motorhome, driving from Estes Park, Colorado down the Big Thompson Canyon where I live. I couldn't do a better job recording it, you get an idea of the scenery around here.

The third one passes my driveway if you want to cut to the chase.

It starts on the eastern edge of Estes Park, located to the west of me:

Here is the important one, don't blink or you'll miss the moment.

Start paying attention at 1:45: the turn-off to my house is coming up, it's to the right, where the orange newspaper box is:

Now we go past my post office on the left at 56 seconds into the video. When I go to get the mail, I flip a U-turn in the highway right after that large restaurant on the left to park in front of the post office.

This one is interesting because it has the narrows of the canyon:

The last one is for greatmartin: very early on we see the Dam Store to the left:

As they come out past that meadow to the right, that's where my cousin Betsy always comments on the beautiful scenery. She seemed to think the mountains got in the way of the view.

These videos are wonderful! I'm trying to stay alive long enough to het out west. Mountains, deserts, slit canyons, ghost towns... you get the idea...

I want to see a slit canyon sometime. Here's a good ghost town website:

https://www.ghosttowns.com/states/nv/nvelko.html - this puts you in one of the counties so you can click on the towns.

This is an example of one the towns: https://www.ghosttowns.com/states/nv/charleston.html

Beautiful! Looks just like BC.

I still remember driving on what felt like a logging road on the west side of your island (Hwy 14 to Cowichan Lake) - it felt like we'd never get anywhere, and surely it must be 3 am by now, but it was only 9 pm when we got back to Sooke Basin.

I'll have to watch these when I get back to my laptop. My phone screen isn't the good best place to watch videos.

No, the small screen wouldn't work so well. I was impressed that she kept the camera on the road, didn't go to the houses etc along the sides. Maybe more scenery would of been nice, but the road itself is pretty interesting to drive, lots of curves.

I even heard her say 'Dam Store'!!!--I am going to get there one day!
I haven't driven on roads like that since I was last in Chattanooga!
Beautiful country!

And she emphasized it just right!

Very cool! Did you see me wave as we passed your house?

Big, champagne-colored motorhome! I just knew that was you!

I had no idea it was so beautiful in your part of the country. I have only flown over on my way to Vegas or Phoenix. I am not a fan of the desert, but the scenery in the last video, after the Dam Store, is incredible. They seemed to be driving very fast. I got nervous with the drop offs so close. And I didn't know it was so rocky there. I am truly a flatlander.

It's rocky, and the altitude is decreasing from 7600 to 5000 ft above sea level, so they are driving downhill, winding along the river. They made some good time there - posted 8 videos of about 4 minutes each to get from Estes to the mouth of the canyon - 32 minutes - not too shabby for out of state folk. I thought it was nice that they didn't talk very much. If we ever have another devastating flood, their videos will be a good record of what the canyon looked like along the highway in 2010.
