Computers

I used to be more of a computer geek, but now I only go as far as I need to in order to get done what I need to do on the computer.

Today I spent some time trying to work around some bugs in Windows 7 on my new laptop. Win 7 has this irritating quirk called Focus Stealing, meaning you'll be working in the active window and then some computer event happens, like maybe the mouse strays a tiny bit or some background computer event occurs, and some other window becomes the active window. Then you have to take your hands off the keyboard and use the mouse to click back on the window you want.

That doesn't sound like the end of the world, but using the Caps Lock key counts as opening a new window, so you're typing along in Word, use the caps lock, and all of a sudden you're not in Word any more. Because a little window came on the screen to indicate the Caps Lock was turned on or off. Jeez! How could even Microsoft in its infinite arrogance consider this to be a 'feature' instead of a bug?

There is a solution: you have to download a free program called Tweakit and click a box. The problem for me is that the Win 7 version of Tweakit does not include that option. So I had to edit the Registry, which is supposed to be dangerous and tricky, but it wasn't all that bad, and it worked. I'm still a little miffed that I had to spend an hour figuring all this out.

The other thing was the jumping cursor while trying to type. Turns out this is caused by brushing the touchpad on the laptop while typing. I made some changes to the touchpad settings and it seems to have helped.

Yes, I know Mac users don't have these problems. I have both a PC and a Mac, and for business use I don't like the way the Mac versions of Word, Excel, and Quickbooks work, so that's why I have a PC for the office.

The Mac is better for blogging on MyBloggers than the PC because there are never those days when the data entry screen goes wonky and shows you only some of the screen, and the commenting works first time, every time.

We bought our first Mac in 1984 when they first came out and both used Macs at work. I think if I had never had to switch at work I'd still think it's the only operating system worth having.

Hopefully you never will have any computer problems and have to go through the troubleshooting process.

I've had some issues with Win 7 but nothing like yours. I can't get it to load the 64 bit versions of some of my Adobe Photoshop add-ons correctly, and Win 7 is supposedly a 64 bit system! Oh well, they work. They just change mode to 16 bit when I use them.

When I was looking at downloading drivers they differentiating between Win 7 and Win 7 64 bit, but I didn't get into the differences. There was such a short time between Vista and Win 7 I don't think the software developers had time to catch up.

You lost me after Focus Stealing--shows you how little I know--I have to post my pictures on another blog in order to post them here--for what ever reason I'm not able to do it here--but it does get done!

Sometimes my photos won't load up here, and it's not a matter of the file sizes, just a mystery.

Ah yes... my computer skills have been slipping but I am ok with that. There is just so much to keep up with! Sounds like you are really on top of things in my opinion...

It's funny how once we get away from a desk job where our computer is the most important thing, all that doesn't matter so much anymore, and life still goes on.

I'm no match for your computer techie skills. I'm just foomfing along doing the same old thing and trying to outwit the virus e mails I get. One standard e mail says there was a package they were unable to deliver. You click on that and you're a goner.

Those virus emails really worry me because so many people have started sending links to UTube and other wonderful sites they think we can't live without seeing. I always debate whether I want to take my life in my hands and click on it. That's one reason I use a Mac for email because supposedly they aren't as susceptible to viruses, but I still think twice.

I wish you were here instead of there.
