I used to be more of a computer geek, but now I only go as far as I need to in order to get done what I need to do on the computer.
Today I spent some time trying to work around some bugs in Windows 7 on my new laptop. Win 7 has this irritating quirk called Focus Stealing, meaning you'll be working in the active window and then some computer event happens, like maybe the mouse strays a tiny bit or some background computer event occurs, and some other window becomes the active window. Then you have to take your hands off the keyboard and use the mouse to click back on the window you want.
That doesn't sound like the end of the world, but using the Caps Lock key counts as opening a new window, so you're typing along in Word, use the caps lock, and all of a sudden you're not in Word any more. Because a little window came on the screen to indicate the Caps Lock was turned on or off. Jeez! How could even Microsoft in its infinite arrogance consider this to be a 'feature' instead of a bug?
There is a solution: you have to download a free program called Tweakit and click a box. The problem for me is that the Win 7 version of Tweakit does not include that option. So I had to edit the Registry, which is supposed to be dangerous and tricky, but it wasn't all that bad, and it worked. I'm still a little miffed that I had to spend an hour figuring all this out.
The other thing was the jumping cursor while trying to type. Turns out this is caused by brushing the touchpad on the laptop while typing. I made some changes to the touchpad settings and it seems to have helped.
Yes, I know Mac users don't have these problems. I have both a PC and a Mac, and for business use I don't like the way the Mac versions of Word, Excel, and Quickbooks work, so that's why I have a PC for the office.
The Mac is better for blogging on MyBloggers than the PC because there are never those days when the data entry screen goes wonky and shows you only some of the screen, and the commenting works first time, every time.
