That Bus Monitor Video

I'm sure you've seen something about the online video about the middle school kids in upstate New York harassing and bullying a 62 year-old bus monitor. It's 10 minutes long, but you don't need to watch the whole thing to get the idea. You all watch more TV news than I do, so you probably know more about it than I do.

One kid filmed it on a cell phone in order to post it, because that is the trend these days, similar to teens filming fist fights with other teens and posting it

Horrible, just horrible. What I want to know is why the bus driver didn't stop the bus, and what do these kids' parents have to say.

Years ago a school bus driver was telling me that middle school kids are the worst-behaved. This confirms that, but there is no excuse for their behavior.

Since the video has gotten so much attention, some of the children have apologized, and some of them have received death threats. I would like to hear that the parents have also apologized for the crappy job they are doing as parents.

A huge amount of money has been raised to give to the poor woman, last time I looked it was hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maybe she can afford to quit that miserable job.

Middle class parents, apparently, bought the trend that became fashionable few years ago toward permissive parenting. This was supposed to insure that the child was "freed" to grow into that very special person he was destined to be. No rules, no guidelines, no consequences for bad behavior. A parenting writer (Dr. John Rosemond) whose column appears every week in our local newspaper constantly reminds everyone that a child without boundaries is going to grow into a monster.

I blame some of it on the loss of extended family relationships - people don't live near their older relatives or have steadying influences in their own lives, so no motivation to hold the children to standards.

I simply cannot understand the abominable behavior of kids today. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR SOCIETY?

I was appalled at this. I hope it shocked some parents into paying more attention to their kids, but I doubt it.

I was so enraged by this and hurt for that poor woman. I hope this raises awareness about bullying and shames some middle-schoolers out of that hateful behavior.

I've heard references to bullying, but never saw it in action until this, and if that's what's going on all over the place, then our society really has a problem. People can badmouth organized religion all they want, but at least it gives some people a moral compass.

Very good point lady!

This is horrible. People have passed their superficial judgements about fat
people on to their children. I think parents can teach children not to be
mean to their elders and then I remember how we treated our home ec teacher in highschool. She has the last laugh. She can retire now that she has
enough money to quit that miserable job.

This behavior is about more than children behaving abusively to a fat person, but about children believing abusive behavior toward anything they choose to be prejudiced about is OKAY. Their parents are to blame. There is, apparently, no morality being taught, and I will bet you at least some of these children have grown up in church-going households.

I know bullying went on when we were kids, but in this high tech world, it gets spread around and the peer pressure and group mentality or whatever excuse people are pulling out these days encourages it even as people are sitting alone at their computers using social sites such as facebook or blogs.

If she responded in any way she would probably be on the carpet!! Supposedly the parents of the kids are outraged and the kids 'are waiting for their punishment'! HA!
Meanwhile there is a fund drive and they have collected $400,000---yse, that's $400,000--for her.

I agree, the fear of losing her job as a result of asserting her authority when the irate parents of those nasty little darlings complained to the school board probably had a lot to do with her passivity.

I did see this on the news. I saw one person post it and blame the monitor for not doing her job and keeping the kids in their place, and I have seen many who feel for her. I guess I see both sides. I am not a parent, but I really can't see how parents are blamed so much for what their kids do. I remember being a kid and I would join in on crappy behavior because the other kids were doing it, kind of like a group mentality. It wouldn't have mattered in that moment what my parents had "taught" me. Again, I am not a parent, but I also think that kids act on their own in many instances. I am with you though, I hope this lady can QUIT this miserable job!!!

I understand what you are saying about the group mentality and parents can't control their children away from home, but one would hope that all parents are teaching their children to respect their elders, which I don't think they are. I saw one commentary that said the bus monitor must have been bullied as a child because she acted not like an adult should, but like a child would in the same situation - a bit like saying women ask to be raped.

That poor woman is going through hell on earth. I would have twisted off the first finger that touched me. Just what is a bus monitor's job? To keep the kids in line? They should hire a bouncer for that job.

That's what I kept wondering: what exactly is supposed to be her job function. With all the unemployment in this country surely there is some big mean-looking hulk of a man looking for a job in the Rochester area.

I seen this on the news and here on youtube.I wished that she give up her job.
It is one of the worst job to handle. These kids or some of them have foul mouth etc.
The bus driver is also the blame. He did not get in between these kids and think that he was fear of it.

It's depressing to think about this kind of thing going on, because I'm sure to some degree it happens to people of all ages every day all over our country.
