Bad News

The phone rang this morning, and Caller ID said "Illinois." It was our long-time cabin rental guest Les who sells cars, and at first I thought he was calling to tell me he'd found a truck I might like.

But no. First he said 'our oldest son died yesterday.' I was thinking car accident? hunting accident? Les wanted me to know in case I saw anything about it on Facebook. But then he said 'he killed himself and my wife found him downstairs.' It just got worse and worse with each sentence: 'We think it was because his girlfriend broke up with him.'

We can think of all the things someone could have said to that 18 year-old kid from a loving well-off middle-class home to give him some perspective on living and loving - how those things are never the end of the world, but no use now.

Another tragedy and a horrific aftermath. Suicides are not thinking clearly. No reason at all for an 18-year-old to think he can't get through a crushing disappointment. We've all been through this as young people. Painful, yes, but suicide is a permanent non-solution. My condolences to your friends.

My youngest son took his own life, he made a visit 2 days before and was his usual self , even showed me his new car he was proud of .

The death of a child is the worst grief one can endure because they are
bone of your bone and flesh of your flesh. Your whole life is devoted to
their welfare. Suicide makes it even worse.

Permanent soluti9on to what was probably a temporary setback. Really sad when some people can't find a better way to cope.

I don't think a suicide realizes all the hurt and puzzlement they leave behind. I don't know how a parent deals with the death of their child though I have had 2 close friends go through that.
