Today was my annual day for matching up containers with their lids. It drives me nuts to not be able to find the lid for the container in my hand when I need to store some leftovers or other things. So I pulled them all out of the cabinet and matched them up. I'm taking all the oddballs back to Colorado in case that is where their mates are. When I have a dull day there, I'll do the same thing - match it all up. There are bound to be leftovers, and they will go out into purgatory in the garage in case I made a mistake and their partner turns up some day. Remember that old expression 'there's a lid for every pot.' It's a cousin of 'so many fish in the sea.'
I've also tried the annual match up for socks. What a frustrating experience. Every time I'd go from one home to the other, I'd bring all my odd socks in case their mates were at the destination. I didn't keep track of how many times they went back and forth in order to identify the hopeless cases, but I'm betting the same 5 socks have made the 700 mile journey a number of times. One time, I took all the socks, mated and not mated to Colorado in order to start over. But I still have odd socks and don't have the courage to toss out the spares in case the other magically appears. Murphy has a law for that, and I'm not going to break it.
Knit yourself some hi-top slippers and wear those mismatched socks on days you're not going out.
