Annual Lid Match Up

Today was my annual day for matching up containers with their lids. It drives me nuts to not be able to find the lid for the container in my hand when I need to store some leftovers or other things. So I pulled them all out of the cabinet and matched them up. I'm taking all the oddballs back to Colorado in case that is where their mates are. When I have a dull day there, I'll do the same thing - match it all up. There are bound to be leftovers, and they will go out into purgatory in the garage in case I made a mistake and their partner turns up some day. Remember that old expression 'there's a lid for every pot.' It's a cousin of 'so many fish in the sea.'

I've also tried the annual match up for socks. What a frustrating experience. Every time I'd go from one home to the other, I'd bring all my odd socks in case their mates were at the destination. I didn't keep track of how many times they went back and forth in order to identify the hopeless cases, but I'm betting the same 5 socks have made the 700 mile journey a number of times. One time, I took all the socks, mated and not mated to Colorado in order to start over. But I still have odd socks and don't have the courage to toss out the spares in case the other magically appears. Murphy has a law for that, and I'm not going to break it.

The only lids I'm missing are the ones Don threw out.
Knit yourself some hi-top slippers and wear those mismatched socks on days you're not going out.

Yesterday I started using a project management application that tracks time spent on each task, so I'll know how much / little time I spend knitting and that will motivate me to do more of it.

I do the lid think more than annually and I still can't figure it out. It's only me and Donna using them. I suspect that she uses a bottom now and then for a craft project and it doesn't make it back to the kitchen.

The really big mystery that I don't think I'll ever solve is the lids to those plastic totes. I have a big stack of various sizes, and when I need one for the box in my hand, not a one of them fits. I DO use some of them for trays that house plants sit on, especially when starting seeds indoors over winter, but even accounting for that, it doesn't make sense. I keep trying to think where are the ones being used without their lids. There must be about 15 of them somewhere and I don't notice them when I'm looking around.

I have water in my fridge and some apples for snacking--you gave me a great idea for a post--I just took 4 pictures of my open fridge and freezer!!!

My guess is there is a 2 layer carrot cake on the left, and another one on deck behind it.

Annual lid day sounds good. When I was a kid, my mother instituted a general sock drawer that was in the living room buffet, because 7 kids' socks are infinite. Any unmatched socks from a clean laundry load were put in there so you could go look if you had a single sock. Of course soon it became 2 drawers.

I have considered buying only one color/style of socks and then they would be universal match, but I would feel badly about getting rid of my tried and true oddballs that have built up.

I can picture you informing your family members that they better get out all their containers because you're comin' over with yours. "Don't give me any lip, just line 'em up."

I don't have mismatched socks--the only time I wear socks is when I go to the theatre and I have 3 pairs of black socks for that!
"I need to store some leftovers"--what the heck is a leftover?????
