Our Animal Companions

I have to ask those of you who share your homes with dogs and/or cats, do they come into the bathroom with you?

Back when the corgis used to stay with me at my house in Colorado, they always insisted on coming in there with me. I asked their owner, and she said they always went in with her, too, but not her husband or any other men.

Our old cat Buddy the Interstate Cat used to come in once in awhile someone was taking a shower. Now, our new cat, Eloise, follows me in there. If the door is shut - closed but not latched - I'll see a paw come around the edge, and then a nosy little face. She likes to look in the drawers and cabinets and jump into the bathtub.

Both Kraymer and Tucker venture in there from time to time. Kraymer likes to know where I am at all times it seems, so he's the more concerned of the two. Once he knows I am in the bathroom he usually leaves and lays down outside of the door, but sometimes he finds a bath mat quite comfy.

No, my parents don't allow the furr-kids to lounge out in any of the bathrooms, but if it was my choice, it would be a free for all.

Due to severe and repetitive acts of vandalism I was forced to keep my bathroom door shut, beginning about a week ago. I find it is less stressful and completely humane do do so.

Buddy used to get up in the middle of the night and pull the toilet paper off the roll and take some bites out of it.

That is a charming photo of Eloise. You are lucky to get such a good kitty after your loss.

Very lucky to be found by Eloise, one of the nicest cats I've ever had, and she likes me best, which is a change from Buddy.

Only Max, the manx cat, follows me in, sits on the mat, waits for me to finish, sometimes rubs against my leg. Chewy comes in if I am having "a soak" and is upset because I am wet and he is certain that is fatal. Brunswick always does his own thing, except he will join me if I am napping, sticks his nose in my face, "yep, that's her" and settles down by my side. Sniff, my late tuxedo cat, got VERY upset if I was showering. Would put a paw around my leg and try to stop me from getting in.

Sometimes I wish we had more cats because I'll bet Eloise would enjoy a companion, but opinions differ here in the house.

It got crowded in there with two Corgis, but never lonely.

For some reason they like to come in with women but don't attempt to give
guys their company.
comment by elderjane on Jan 13, 2013 6:06 PM ()
I wonder why that is.

We keep a litter box in the bathroom, so the cats always have access. They get upset when I use it, though...

When we were in Colorado, Eloise took mice into the bathtub for the last supper. At least the remains were easy to clean up.

No closed doors permitted in my home. The cats are my constant company, unless the vacuum comes out of the closet.
comment by marta on Jan 13, 2013 1:29 PM ()
We have to have the closet doors open a cat-sized crack or Eloise can't rest.

Angel claws holes in doors that are closed. I try to sneak into the bathroom when she's not looking but she has a sixth sense about such things and will suddenly appear, winding herself in figure 8s around my ankles. She knows how much I hate that and how powerless I am to stop her. She doesn't do this to her daddy.

No cat in sight, but go into the bathroom, and there she is.

When I had dogs nothing, no room was safe--they felt they owned the place and allowed me to stay there!

I loved taking care of those corgis - they treated me like I was their best friend and my house was their home.
