The 99 Cent Store

It's really the $.99999 store (rounds up to a dollar), but either way it's fun to go there. There is a nice one near us that has fresh produce, refrigerated, and frozen foods in addition to everything else. Today I almost bought some Caramel Peeps Dipped in Dark Chocolate (also available dipped in milk chocolate), but it was too impulsive a purchase, so I resisted.

Mr. Troutbend was excited because they had large bags of Corn Nuts in various flavors. The last time we were there, all they had was spicy hot flavor. He takes them to bowling league to share.

We went there for Christmas wrap and curling ribbon, got that, and avoided the $.79 large gift bags, although it wouldn't have hurt to get one or two just in case. I try not to buy Christmas stuff on spec.

I also bought a head of cauliflower that Safeway would have charged at least $2.89 for, and a bag of fresh whole green beans, and some nice fresh tomatoes.

They had a large variety of puddings and snacks in cups - indulgent (according to the labels) chocolate puddings, rice pudding, and tapioca pudding, to name a few. I don't buy that kind of stuff, but thought it was nice for the folks who need a treat. They also have fresh bread now, which I'll try to remember for next time I'm buying.

I bought a jar of dehydrated sliced garlic in the spice section, something I keep an eye out for, to use in soups.

It's time to start thinking about Christmas dinner, start figuring out what goes good with a ham that I already have in the freezer.

On the way home we stopped at the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. Do you have those in your part of the country? It's a thrift store that doesn't have any clothes, but lots of hardware and building stuff. They have lots of 80s and 90s dishwashers that nobody is going to want, and builder-grade light fixtures that people replaced with something they liked better. And cans of rejected paint. I enjoy looking at the color dabs on the lids and picturing the despair of the person who had it mixed up on purpose and then was disappointed when they got it home.

We just got a Dollar Tree but I haven't been in there yet. We have a ReStore in a nearby town, but I haven't been there either. I am not a fan of window shopping. (Hah. That was a pun!)

I never trust the food at our local dollar stores... it scares me to think of the quality of it...

I know what you mean. I had read that items that look like name brands might be counterfeit. But I don't buy toothpaste or aspirin there. I figure their fresh produce is as good as is available at the mainstream supermarkets.

Have to keep an eye out for a Habitat store like you describe. Love supporting them. I do like to mosey through our Goodwill resale shop. Our local dollar stores are cheesy. I can't bring myself to go into one. All I can see when I look at the merchandise are poorly paid workers in factories overseas somewhere and outsourced Americans. I shouldn't generalize, but I can't seem to trust the supply chain that serves those types of stores.

I think everyone has their own comfort level and shops accordingly.

We have the dollar tree but it doesn't have fresh foods just frozen ones. I
wish we had one like yours.

You are better off with Aldi's.

One thing you will NEVER find on a grocery store shelf:

Dehydrated Water

A big day in retailing history when they came up with that one.

You put a pix of the Peeps in this post, yet you resisted buying them??!! You are one strong woman!!!

It was a tough decision. Mr. YouKnow was with me, and he always gives me the look if it's not on the grocery list.

Our dollar stores rarely have anything I want and are not worth stopping at in order to buy maybe the one thing I could use. I am, when I can manage it, addicted to one-stop shopping and even though I am spending more at times, I prefer it. We don't have the hardware only dollar stores here. I think I'd get more use out of one of those. Finally, what is a Peep? I thought it was something a chick did.

Peeps are a popular Easter item - those marshmallow chicks that are colored bright pink or bright yellow. Lately, the company has tried to convince us that Peeps aren't just for Easter anymore.

Around here we have a store called "The Dollar Tree", which is pretty much the same thing. LOVE IT! I'm also a regular at the Habitat Re-store. I was able to paint my family room for about $5 using their paint. I also love to buy doors and trim there. The house I just finished needed three doors and I was Ble to purchase all three for the price of one. I've saved tons of money over the years by shopping there.

If they have what you can use, it's a wonderful thing. The Re-Store here in Las Vegas has a lot of odd lot stock from hardware stores, and it's always fun to see what they have on offer.

that habitat store we call salvage yards --love nosing around them--resistance you deserve a medal--- there are a lot of cheap stores here, some in a chain, cheap as chips is one, but none sell fresh food

It's always fun to browse those places, never know when we might come across something we can't live without.
