New Home

I decided in order to be able to part with Quackers, I would need to wake up one morning and say 'this is the day' on impulse. So today was the day.

We loaded him into a big box, and my fears that he would thrash around were not realized.

The other goose at the new place was very glad to see him, but Quackers wasn't so thrilled. I hope he settles in. I'm afraid to call and find out how he is doing.

Every moment with Quackers was a delight, and I feel honored that we had a chance to get to know him this summer. If you ever get a chance to be friends with a goose or a duck, give it a chance, you will be rewarded.

How far did you move Quackers?

He's only five miles away. I was so worried he'd freak out in the car, but we had a big, tall moving box so he was able to stand in there. Bless his heart for being such a good goose, and I miss him so much. I have hundreds of pictures, though.

Lucy and Quackers have each other for girl talk. You know how important
that is.

Oh, I hope so. Quackers was starting to get a little aggressive toward people, so I hope being with other goose will mellow him/her out.

Generally, in the bird family, I don't know about geese, the male has more colorful plumage or, as we say, are prettier!!!

This type of goose is just shades of brown and gray, regardless of the sex. Supposedly the males have a different sound than the females.

I had 21 birds and all the females laid eggs with or without partners (I had to separate the zebra finches--they are worse than rabbits!!!!) and most within 2-3 months of being hatched.

The people at the new home were hoping Quackers was a boy so they would have fertile eggs from their Lucy Goose. But it sounds like they've decided he really is a girl because they were calling him 'she' this morning when I called. Gee, people better not send their kids to stay at my house - they'd end up all gender confused.

We miss Quackers already. This will be known as the Quackers summer.

Of all things, a goose. I'm so glad it wasn't a Pepe le Pew summer with a friendly skunk deciding to camp out in the yard.

Yes, please do call and check on him and please let us know how he is adjusting!!!!

See my reply to Teal. I fervently hope Quackers soon forgets about us and loves it there.

Please call and check on him.

I called this morning, and they said Quackers is doing fine. The other goose, Lucy, is older, and she has taken on the role of mother goose. I can go visit any time.

Very empty around here. We'll get over it, but it will take awhile.

Not really--a lot of birds lay non-fertile eggs without partners
comment by greatmartin on Aug 23, 2012 8:27 AM ()
It's a matter of age, not partners.

Was the other goose a male or female??
comment by greatmartin on Aug 22, 2012 7:52 PM ()
The other goose is a female, named Lucy. She acted thrilled to have another goose friend as opposed to the chickens, peacock, and turkey. We suspect Quackers is a girl, too. If he/she was hatched this spring, egg laying could start next early spring, and that's when we'll know for sure.
