Flood: Drake Devastation

I'm counting my blessings that I don't live at the confluence of two rivers. This is where I went to get my mail, and then on down that road to go grocery shopping in Loveland. The state's goal is to have this highway opened by December 1, 2013.

To see the videos, click on the link and then look for the video posts. Sorry it's not easier to get there, and I hope they don't make you log into Facebook to see it. But what you see in the video is worth seeing.

Glory, the sights just leave me shaking my head.... It is truly had to imagine the torrent of rain that fell so fast, but the result is just painful to see.

It truly is a strange feeling to see familiar houses and landmarks next to what looks as alien as the surface of the moon, and especially at my house. Every time I go there, for a moment before I come around the bend in the driveway, I think I'm going to see it the way it was, as if the past 3 weeks had been just a dream.

Oh, that's right. I'd forgotten about the seasons below the equator. I hope you are all doing well.

We have 2 more months of hurricane 'season'.

I'll watch out for it on the Weather Channel, and have a lot more empathy for all involved.

The gorgeous scenery is still there in the midst of the devastation. How far do you have to walk to get to your place? Are you sleeping a little now?

Every night it's a struggle to sleep beyond 3 am. I wake up and get to thinking about things, so turn on the computer and make plans, and then if I'm really lucky I drift off for an hour or two, but lately I haven't been lucky. Tonight I'm trying Nyquil, and I don't have any pressing business tomorrow, so maybe I'll finally get some good sleep.

I can drive down my driveway to the edge of the yard at the red cabin, and then maybe 200 feet to the bridge and my house is right across it - all the hiking is on my property, and it's all on the level, not steep.

Very little--it is usually over by the time I wake up in the morning!

It's getting into tropical storm time, isn't it?

Typical of mountain flooding.... incredible really; to be so far above sea level and still get pounded.

It rained and rained, and we were all just happy because it was putting down the fire danger. Silly us.

It is ghastly looking at this devastation. My memories of highway 34
are of such beauty and peace.

People who live in that area are chartering helicopters to fly them in so they can winterize their houses. $900 round trip is cheaper than repairing the damage from burst pipes.

Oh you had floods out you way????

Okay, okay--what did you throw at me???
comment by greatmartin on Sept 29, 2013 4:39 PM ()
Hah! I was watching the Weather Channel this morning, and it looked like you got some rain.
