Critters

The mountain lion is looking for baby foxes. He's just outside the dining room window - 10 feet from our back door. There seems to be one baby fox left - the only fox coming around now. Both parents seem to have moved on. His coloring has filled in, and he's hard to tell from an adult. And sometimes there's raccoons. An elk or a deer - looks like a ghost of animal.

What clarity in those pictures! The first fox is beautiful!

The wildlife cam has done really well this summer. We finally figured out where to set it up to get some pictures. Last year it'd be just elk feet or a blur at night that could be anything.

Oh, the pretty foxes. I just love those. I also saw the wonderful photo of the elk with velvet on its horns, on FB. The wildlife I see most often here are just rabbits -- one built a nest in my wishing well, so I delayed the lawnmowing until the babies were out; then a few weeks later I looked casually out my front door and there was the mother rabbit sitting upright on the lawn, not far from my steps, staring at the door, while nursing 3 of the young rabbits. One was lying on its back under her with his feet in the air. So hilarious.

We had the same rabbit around here for years, somehow it evaded the foxes. Now it's been two or three since I've seen any, but one of these days, maybe.

Donna is afraid of bear even tho they are more interested in the bird feeders than people. I don't know how she'd do with a mountain lion!

It's nice to see one once in awhile so we feel connected with nature, but prefer them to be not too close to the house and yard. I don't know if mountain lions & bears tend to avoid each other, meaning if there's a lion, then no bears. So far this summer we haven't had any bears here, but there is one about 5 miles away raiding chicken coops.

And we get snakes, lizards, tourists, etc!

I haven't seen any snakes this summer - harmless garter snakes - but still time before snow flies.
