The Bear Came Back

Despite various measures to scare away the bear, he came back last night and got into the garage at our guest cabin where the trash from the previous guests was stored waiting for trash day. The measures included talk radio playing in there, rags soaked in ammonia, and cayenne pepper scattered around.

This is what a bear did to the garage door a few years ago. It might have been the same bear, or a close relative.

I'm very grateful that last night the rebuilt door didn't get damaged because it wasn't locked: the bear was able to shake it open. Yes, he got into the trash and scattered it around the back yard, but no permanent damage to structures.

The current guests over there are from North Platte, Nebraska, and he's over the moon because he's always wanted to match wits with the bears. They always bring bear spray and a couple of years ago the son-in-law decided to try some on himself to see what it's like. I gave him the shotgun loaded with rubber buckshot that came from the Parks and Wildlife people, and he hung a bucket of empty beer cans from the door latch so if the bear returns it will make a noise and he can pop out there with the shotgun. They parked their cars out of the way to avoid collateral damage. They are going be disappointed if the bear is off on his rounds and doesn't get back here during their stay. He was here at 10 last night - that's when they heard a noise (I was gone) - so he might come back around that time tonight.

I've got game cameras set up in a couple of places - it'd be nice to get a photo of this bear that's been pestering us all summer.

I'm not sure which is riskier: what the bear might do, or what the guest from North Platte might get up to. The latest is he wants to attract the bear by putting chicken bones in a bucket full of empty beer cans balanced on the latch to that garage. Besides being illegal, it doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm going to do something about it tomorrow, hoping the bear doesn't show up tonight.

That door looks like the Hulk came to visit. What do you do, train a bigger bear to act as a guard? I wonder if the trash collectors ever run into bears.

The bears go wait at the dump, let it come to them instead of going after it.

Sheesh, and I thought raccoons were bad.

Raccoons would be smart enough to open that garage door, and I wouldn't put it past them. But we have bear scat in the yard, so...

This scenario gets my investigative reporter genes dancing, but may everyone stay safe from this pestering bear, whose nuisance behavior and fondness for human trash is concerning. I guess the only way to store human trash until pick-up day is in a freezer.

We've got fights on Facebook about whether it's moral to even mention the bear sightings because looky-loos might rush over there in hopes of getting a cute video. The other side thinks it's a public service announcement so people are alerted to the risks. I think the latter won.

A friend of mine had her outdoor freezer broken into by a bear.

Jigsaw puzzles at the neighbors - two nights in a row as it turned out. We get going, and don't want to quit: just one more piece.

Avoid encountering that bear at all costs. I hate to think of you coming home late at night and running into him.

I don't go walking around outdoors after dark, that's for sure.
