Titanic

A local radio station sometimes has teachers or one of their students read something they have composed. A tenth grade girl read a poem about the Titanic and I liked her imagery. I was writing as fast as I could and think I got most of it:

TITANIC
It was the finest ship man could aspire to make
In all the world she had no peer
The Titanic steamed across the cold dark sea
The ship was elegant in her majesty

The Atlantic was calm, the night was clear
Then an assassin crossed her bow
An iceberg slashed her breast
There were none to heed her calls of distress
As the great ship groaned in misery
She listed and the sea rushed in
Some passengers chose to leap
As she quickly slid into the icy deep
And Captain Smith went down with his ship.

I thought that this would be about the movie. Thank you for the lovely
poem.

Hi jeri; thank you too. I liked the line about how the iceberg slashed the breast of the Titanic. Any time I ever hear anything about the Titanic the rest of my life, I'll see that in my mind.

It's interesting that she saw beyond the imagery of the movie (whatever that was) to come up with her own.

Yes, I liked that too, that she wrote from historical perspective, as it were.

The kid is talented. Glad you could post this much of her poem.

Hi teal; Thank goodness for remnants of high school shorthand! Sometimes tho, I can barely decipher it later!

Nice job! It's great that the radio station gives writing and poetry a forum like that!

Hi marta; I wish they'd do it more often; For some reason I'm always surprised by the students, by how fresh eyes see the world.
