A Tale of Buried Gold

The Greene County Herald is published once a week on Thursdays, and on Thursday, March 8, 2012 the headline was "Tales of Buried Gold Part of County Folklore."

This story has been written about many times, but this is the best researched and well written account of this true story that I have encountered. Herald staff writer David Breland did an excellent job reporting on the lost (and found) gold legend.
The men who found the gold were great great uncles of mine, which makes it especially interesting.

You can go online at Greene County Herald online.com and read it yourself.

(BTW, the paper is printed in Leakesville Mississippi, the County Seat for Greene County, and is the best county newspaper around.

Don't know if you'll get notice of that reply, so here is that comment that you'll get notice of:

Yes, I found it online. For a minute I thought they were going to require a paid subscription, but they didn't. I keep thinking about when we were kids and there'd be some newspaper article my mother wanted a copy of, and she'd track down someone in our small town who subscribed to that particular paper and would still have a stack of them on their porch.

What a miracle of our modern age that we are able to get to see a small local paper like that online. And what a great story.

Did you go online to find the story? I don't dare try because my pc kicks me off if I try that.

Buried treasure is always intriguing.

Hi jeri; the druggist who swindled the men out of the gold went to Mobile and built a mansion, and his kids and succeeding generations have had a good life. The men he swindled have not. sigh

I have a nephew named David Breland, but he lives in Jackson, Ms.

Hi Larry; This David Breland is a really good reporter.
Hope you are well.

One of Al Capone's boys supposedly buried loot near or in the town (Phoenicia) where I lived a few years back. The story was on Discovery, or one of those stations, but the loot hasn't turned up. Oh well.... Yeah, you're right, I won't be looking up the Greene County newspaper...

Hi jj; Awww, why not?
