("Pickles" is a syndicated newspaper comic strip featuring Earl and Opal Pickles, an elderly married couple.)
Earl and a friend are sitting on a park bench; Earl is talking and his friend is reading the paper.
Earl says:"Yesterday I bought some socks at the store. The price came to $19.51. So I said to the clerk, Hey...1951! That was the year Harry Truman fired General MacArthur.
She looked at me with a blank stare, so I had to explain to her all about MacArthur and Truman and the Korean war.
I was in the express line so I had to give her the Reader's Digest condensed version, but she didn't seem very interested.
And before i could finish, the people in line behind me began geting upset and starting to mutter, so I had to cut it short."
His friend looks over quizzically and Earl says "So, anyway, I'm not allowed in the express line anymore."
(Earl, you're my kinda guy.) susil
