Mr. Jim Bob

My friend Dottie 's father is deaf as a rock. Mr. Jim Bob is an ornery old cuss and won't wear any of the numerous hearing aid devices Dottie has taken him to be fitted with over the years. She says when she drives up to his house she can hear his TV at maximum volume all the way down to the mailbox. Luckily he lives out in the woods or there would be noise complaints if he had any nearby neighbors.
At family gatherings Mr. Jim Bob gets miffed because he thinks the family is ignoring him. After shouting "How are you?" a couple of times people tend to give up trying to communicate. Dottie thinks he's trying to lip read sometimes, but with poor eyesight he doesn't do that too well either. She keeps his nails trimmed and on her last visit hollered "What about your nails?"  He grumpily hollered back "I don't give a damn about the jails, but I need my toesnails cut."
Because she is used to using maximum decibels to communicate, it carries over to the rest of her contacts. I gave up going to Cracker Barrel with her because her voice is so loud, and she doesn't realize it. Couple that with her annoying habit of spotting any one of the discomfited young servers--every time we go--and loudly asking things like "Didn't you used to work in X-ray at the hospital? Your face looks really familiar."
You can hear her all over the room. It's embarrassing and I talk very softly and quietly hoping to allay her loudness and hoping she'll tone it down. So what embarrasses her? After a meal I once got out a compact and put on lipstick. Dottie says "You're going to put on lipstick--at the table?!!"    On the phone, I can prop the phone up on my shoulder and hear her from a foot away. Dottie swears she has very acute hearing--but it's odd she doesn't realize how loud she is herself. (Maybe she's right though--if I'm eating something as quiet as a marshmallow, she'll holler "I can hear you eating something!")
Well thanks, Mr. Jim Bob--via Dottie, your deafness has impacted my life too!
