Front page news here in the Hattiesburg paper--Brett Favre, local boy, has unretired again! He's signed with the Vikings. Not that I give a toot, but he has waffled and changed his mind so often I'm wondering what's up with him? Is he having mental problems? His many pictures in the paper show him looking gray haired and wizened and 20 years older than his stated age of 39. I didn't know till I read in a magazine (not the local paper-they don't talk about this--that Favre has a past history of drug and alcohol addiction.)
I suspect his entire persona is made up of being "Brett Favre, football star." Maybe retirement is empty for him because football is all he knows. He needs a hobby--something else he can love and concentrate on so he can really retire and enjoy it.
On another subject, I heard on NPR that Lt. William Calley has made his first public statements about the massacre in Mi Lai, Vietnam in 1969. Calley has never spoken up before on advice of his lawyer, but at a Kiwanis meeting he said he was told by superiors to "clear the village" and did so. He expressed regret for what happened to the villagers and his men who were involved.
He's had 40 years to think about what he ordered his men to do. I know war is hell, and all that--but the slaughter of women and children cannot be absolved under any circumstances.
