The last few minutes of True Blood this week were extraordinarily moving. It turns out that Godric, the 2,000 year old vampire sheriff of Dallas had voluntarily turned himself in to the church of "Fellowship Of The Sun" to sacrifice himself to be burned on a cross by the sun at daybreak.  He had not been abducted.
But the plan hd been foiled when he was rescued. He was removed as sheriff and was complacent with this. Eric, the Viking whom he had "made" 1,000 years ago, meets Godric on the roof of the hotel and  asks What's the matter? What's going on?
Godric, a small, tattooed 14- year- old- looking vampire with an English accent shocks Eric by saying "Our existence is insanity. We don't belong here." "It is wrong."
Eric: "You taught me there is no right or wrong. I will keep you alive by force."  He starts to weep. He realizes his maker wants to commit suicide, an unheard of thing for a vampire.
Godric: "If you could, why would you stop me? It would be torture to me." Eric falls to his knees in front of his maker. Godric places his hand on Eric's head and spoke the words to him he had spoken when he made him all those centuries ago. "Fader, bruder, son." (Father, brother, son.) Then Godric says "Let me go. I command you."
Sookie comes up on the roof and says to Eric "It is nearly daylight. Go. I will stay with Godric as long as it takes."
Godrics says "It won't ake long at my age. I don't think like a vampire anymore." Then he asks Sookie "Do you believe in God?" How will he punish me?"
Sookie says: God is a loving God, a forgiving God. That is something we all hope for.."
Godric: " I don't deserve it."  The sky lightens, and tiny wisps of smoke rise from Godric's chest.
Sookie: "Are you very afraid?"
Godric: "No, No I am full of joy!"
Sookie: ..."But the pain.. I'm afraid for you."  She starts to weep.
Godric, astonished: " A Human with me, and human tears..I can still be surprised as I see God." He removes his tunic and faces the sun.
The sun rises on the horizon and its rays turn Godric into blue flame. "Look after Eric," he says
Sookie says: "Goodbye, Godric,"  as he is quickly consumed and nothing is left.
